Patrese verwacht dezelfde titelstrijd: "Verstappen samen met Hamilton de favoriet"

Max Verstappen en Lewis Hamilton vochten vorig seizoen een verbeten titelduel uit. De twee kemphanen bezorgden de sport torenhoge kijkcijfers en men kijkt dan ook reikhalzend uit naar het aankomende Formule 1-seizoen. Verstappen zal er alles aan doen om zijn wereldtitel te verdedigen en men verwacht dat Hamilton terugkomt om zijn historische achtste wereldtitel te pakken.

Maar of de twee coureurs daadwerkelijk aan de kop van het veld gaan rijden is nog maar de vraag. Er gaan aankomend seizoen immers gloednieuwe reglementen in waardoor het startveld stevig door elkaar kan worden gehusseld. Verstappen en Hamilton en hun teams Red Bull Racing en Mercedes moeten dus rekening houden met stevige concurrentie.

50 procent

Toch denkt voormalig Formule 1-coureur Riccardo Patrese dat er maar twee coureurs de dienst gaan uitmaken tijdens het aankomende seizoen. In gesprek met zijn landgenoten van La Gazzetta dello Sport laat Patrese weten dat Verstappen zijn favoriet is: "Hij is samen met Hamilton de favoriet, allebei voor 50 procent. Verstappen heeft zich tijdens de afgelopen twee seizoenen flink verbeterd en de afgelopen twee seizoenen heeft hij veel goede resultaten behaald. Hij is namelijk heel erg snel volwassen geworden. Drie jaar geleden maakte hij fouten die hij nu niet meer maakt."

Kalmte

De Italiaan genoot van de prestaties van Verstappen en zijn vertrouwen is dan ook zeer hoog. Toch wil Patrese Verstappens concurrent Lewis Hamilton niet uitvlakken. Wel houdt de Italiaanse ex-coureur rekening met titelprolongatie: "Max is een coureur die resultaten over de streep kan trekken. Hij heeft nu een wereldtitel op zak dus hij kan met meer kalmte racen. Maar ik verwacht wel een zeer gemotiveerde Hamilton door het einde van vorig seizoen."

Ik veracht dat Norris ineens meedoet met een beest van een McLaren, dat Russell een luis in de pels van Mercedes blijkt te zijn en keer op keer sneller kwalificeert dan Lewis en dat Sainz dit seizoen past echt op stoom komt en vaker wel dan niet op het ereschavot staat.
