Chandhok ziet de sport groeien: "Als men interesse heeft in de F1, dan hebben ze dat ook in de autosport"

Max Verstappen en Lewis Hamilton vochten afgelopen seizoen een breed uitgemeten titelduel uit in de Formule 1. De twee titelrivalen gaven elkaar regelmatig geen centimeter ruimte en wereldwijd smulde men van het absurde titanduel. De kijkcijfers schoten dan ook omhoog en de sport beleeft hoogtijdagen.

Ook in Nederland maakte de sport een enorme groei mee. De successen van Verstappen droegen daar zeker aan bij, tijdens de teruggekeerde Grand Prix op Zandvoort barstte de tribunes haast uit hun voegen. Maar niet alleen in Nederland groeide de populariteit van de sport, wereldwijd schoten de kijkcijfers zeer stijl omhoog. Het bizarre titelduel en de social mediastrategie van de sport droegen daar zeker aan bij.

Autosport

Coureur en analist Karun Chandhok denkt dat de populariteit van de Formule 1 goed is voor de autosport in het algemeen. De voormalig HRT-coureur was te gast in de podcast Fuelling Around, van onder andere touring car-coureur Jason Plato. Chandhok is enthousiast: "Het heeft effect voor iedereen in de sport. Het maakt niet uit wat het is, of het nou de touring cars zijn of de Formule 3. Als mensen interesse hebben in de Formule 1, dan hebben ze ineens ook interesse in de autosport."

Mansell & Hill

Chandhok weet dat het niet de eerste keer is dat titanenduels helpen bij de populariteit van de sport. De Indiër haalt er Britse helden uit het verleden bij: "Je zag het gebeuren in de jaren negentig. Toen had je het tijdperk van Nigel Mansell en Damon Hill. Toen draaide het Verenigd Koninkrijk echt helemaal door en jullie profiteerde daar met de touring cars ook van. Jullie hadden volle tribunes en grote fabrikanten omdat er aandacht was voor de racerij."

Dus als ik het goed begrijp zit dankzij de geweldige strijd tussen Max en Lewis, de gehele autosport niet meer in Chandhokjes?

  vroeger plaatste iedereen de Formule 1 fans in het Karun Schandhok, gelukkig is daar met het duel Max vs Lewis verandering in gekomen
