Steiner verwacht drie sprints: "Vind het niet teleurstellend"

Vorig seizoen experimenteerde de Formule 1 voor het eerst met het sprintkwalificatie format. Er werden drie sprints afgewerkt, op Silverstone, Monza en Interlagos. De reacties waren wisselend maar de hoge heren van de sport waren uiterst positief over het proefballonnetje. Ze willen dan ook graag doorgaan met het format, duidelijkheid is er echter nog niet.

De sport zelf wil het liefst zes sprints organiseren in het aankomende seizoen. Maar dat seizoen begint over iets minder dan een maand en duidelijkheid ontbreekt nog. Er is namelijk onenigheid over geld. De Formule 1 zelf wil de teams financieel compenseren voor de sprints. De kleine teams vinden dit een top plan terwijl grote jongens Mercedes, Red Bull en Ferrari dwars liggen. Ze willen dat het budgetplafond wordt verhoogd.

Gedachtegang

Haas-teambaas Günther Steiner tast vooralsnog in het duister. De Italiaan heeft nog geen idee hoe vaak hij en zijn manschappen zich moeten klaarmaken voor een sprint. Tegenover Motorsport.com laat hij weten zich niet te druk te maken: "We hebben binnenkort een meeting met de F1 Commission en dan zullen we eens gaan kijken hoe we ervoor staan. Persoonlijk denk ik dat we drie sprints gaan rijden, dat is echter mijn gedachtegang. Ik weet het niet zeker maar laten we maar eens afwachten wat er gaat gebeuren."

Niet teleurstellend

Steiner is echter niet kwaad op de dwarsliggende topteams. De markante Italiaan begrijpt de situatie zelfs zeer goed. Hij is een eerlijk man: "Ik vind het helemaal niet teleurstellend want ze proberen gewoon hun werk te doen. Als je veel geld hebt dan heb je een hogere budget cap nodig. Dat is hetzelfde als je geld probeert te krijgen als je dat niet hebt. Als je het mij vraagt zijn ze gewoon hun werk aan het doen dus het stelt mij niet teleur."

Nu de donderdag afgeschaft wordt dit seizoen, moeten al die activiteiten naar de vrijdag en zaterdag verschuiven, wat tot gevolg heeft dat alle sessies een paar uur opschuiven.

Sprintraceweekenden zijn sowieso al waardeloos en die tijden nog waardelozer.

Simpel: in het budget laten maar wel de beslissing voor volgend seizoen nu nemen.
