Alpine-kopstuk zeer tevreden met testweek: "Verschil is dat Verstappen wél met DRS reed"

Het team van Alpine kende een moeilijke eerste testweek op het circuit van Barcelona. De Franse renstal reed geen extreem snelle tijden en daarnaast moesten ze ook nog eens een hele middag missen. Fernando Alonso moest vrijdagochtend namelijk zijn wagen aan de kant van de baan parkeren in een grote rookpluim.

De ambities bij de ploeg waren hoog en de verwachtingen van de buitenwacht waren dan ook aanwezig. De testweek schetste echter een verdraaid lastig beeld. De ploeg reed wel aardig wat rondjes maar ze werden door de concurrentie niet of nauwelijks genoemd als potentieel gevaar. De rookpluim op de laatste dag hielp daar vanzelfsprekend niet bij maar het team zelf ziet amper grote problemen.

Goed voorstaan

Sporting Director Alan Permane is zelfs zeer enthousiast na de eerste week in Barcelona. Hij geeft namelijk ruimschoots toe dat zijn ploeg een klassiek gevalletje van sandbagging heeft toegepast. Het Alpine-kopstuk is er zeer duidelijk over in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Ik wil niet overkomen als iemand met smoesjes en ik ga ook niet roepen dat we Mercedes en Red Bull gaan verslaan, maar ik denk wel dat we er goed voor staan."

Geen DRS

Permane is een positief man en hij zag Fernando Alonso schitteren. De Spanjaard reed volgens zijn team namelijk zeer snelle tijden tijdens de sessie waarin zijn auto veranderde in een rookmachine. "De ronde die Fernando tijdens de laatste ochtend reed was zeer goed te vergelijken met de ronde die Max Verstappen op dat moment reed. Het verschil is namelijk dat Verstappen wél met DRS reed." Volgens Permane was het namelijk zo dat Alonso en Esteban Ocon de testweek zonder DRS afwerkte ook reed de ploeg met veel brandstof.

Tijden zeggen niet veel en je weet niet wie welke programma's afwerkt, maar je kan wel degelijk altijd een inschatting maken. Zo was het in 2009 ook heel duidelijk dat Brawn een raket gebouwd had.
En als je dan kijkt naar de huidige wagens, dan zie je dat Ferrari en McLaren het heel goed voor elkaar hebben. En daarmee zeg ik dus niet dat ze voor de titel gaan, ik heb geen glazen bol... maar ze zien er in ieder geval goed uit.
En ook Mercedes zag ik er weer goed uit, en Red Bull kon ik heel lastig inschatten.

Maar Alpine... nee sorry, ik kan daar nog weinig positiefs over zeggen. Ik denk dan ook echt dat Alpine áchter de bovengenoemde 4 teams zal zitten, en zal moeten strijden met bijvoorbeeld Alpha Tauri en Aston Martin.

Dat Haas weer de rode lantaarn heeft is overigens ook zo duidelijk als wat.

Ik laat me graag verrassen, maar zie het somber in voor Alpine. Hopelijk zijn de verschillen niet te groot.

Maar Verstappen kon gewoon verder rijden na die "snelle" ronde. De Alpine was gelijk helemaal uitgerookt na dat "snelle" rondje.
