Wolff vreest: "Red Bull zal straks een klasse apart zijn"

Regerend constructeurskampioen Mercedes kende een problematische vrijdag in Bahrein. In beide trainingen kwamen de zilverpijlen van George Russell en Lewis Hamilton er niet aan de pas. In de derde vrije training van vandaag ging het echter wel iets beter en leek het erop dat ze aardig in de buurt zaten van concurrenten Red Bull Racing en Ferrari.

Toch waren er ook tijdens de derde training zorgwekkende geluiden te horen bij Mercedes. Russell meldde zich klagend op de boordradio, iets wat Hamilton gisteren ook al deed. Men verwacht dan ook niet teveel van de kwalificatie van vanmiddag en al helemaal niets van de race van de dag van morgen.

Red Bull

Teambaas Toto Wolff was deze ochtend op de teambazen-persconferentie nogal voorzichtig met het doen van grote uitspraken. De Oostenrijker wees Red Bull aan als de grote favoriet, hij wordt geciteerd door Motorsport.com. "Zoals het er nu uit ziet en naar aanleiding van de trainingen, dan moeten we zeggen dat we niet kunnen vechten voor de overwinningen. Ik denk echt dat Red Bull straks een klasse apart zal zijn. Daarachter is het close, er zitten nog veel teams bij elkaar. Het gaat ook nog afhangen van de motorstanden en de hoeveelheid brandstof."

Oplossingen

Wolff en consorten zijn nog opzoek naar oplossingen om de verwachte kloof te dichten. De renstal heeft bijvoorbeeld zeer veel last van porpoising en dat kan men oplossen door de rijhoogte aan te passen. Wolff ziet echter niet één grote oplossing van de bak met problemen: "In de Formule 1 is er nooit één grote oplossing. Er zijn wel wat dingetjes die we nu al begrijpen en die kunnen we oppakken voor de komende races. Maar bij andere zaken gaat het ook nog over de middellange of de korte termijn."

In de kwalificatie zal Mercedes nog een belangrijke rol spelen, maar de race wordt op deze manier voor de coureurs waarschijnlijk een uitputtingsslag…

Ferrari is bijna structureel de snelste maar Red Bull is buitencategorie volgens Toto. Niet iedereen doet aan sandbaggen en theater meneer Wolff!!
