Wolff zoekt oplossingen: "Dan pak je gewoon de kettingzaag erbij"

Het team van Mercedes kende afgelopen weekend een zeer onplezierige seizoensopener in Bahrein. De Duitse renstal kwam geen enkel moment in de buurt van de winst en men moest veel afstand toegeven op Ferrari en Red Bull Racing. Met een gelukje belandde Lewis Hamilton toch nog op het podium.

Hamilton en zijn teamgenoot George Russell stuiterden over het asfalt in Bahrein, ze hadden nog steeds veel last van porpoising. Het is de verwachting dat men aankomend weekend in Saoedi-Arabië nog steeds last zal hebben van deze problemen. Daarnaast waren er nog meer problemen met de nieuwe W13. Ze hadden namelijk ook iets teveel drag en dat hielp ook niet echt.

Drag

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff is eerlijk over de pijnlijke problemen. De Oostenrijker spreekt zich overduidelijk uit tegenover Sky Sports: "Ik denk dat we momenteel over-winged zijn. We hadden teveel drag en dat komt doordat we momenteel een te kort aan onderdelen hebben, hopelijk kunnen we dat snel verhelpen. Het haalt slechts een klein beetje van onze topsnelheid af maar we moeten alles onderzoeken bij de power unit."

Kettingzaag

Wolff lijkt realistischer dan ooit maar hij is zijn humor nog niet verloren. Hij weet namelijk precies wat er moet gebeuren met het oog op Saoedi-Arabië. "Het is makkelijker om de drag dan maar van de auto af te slopen. Je pakt namelijk gewoon de kettingzaag erbij en dan zaag je rustig de gehele achtervleugel aan allerlei stukjes. Dus dat is dan ook precies hetgeen wat wij gaan doen voor Jeddah."
