Binotto spreekt zich uit over bizarre nacht: "20 coureurs met allemaal andere mening"

De Formule 1-wereld stond afgelopen nacht eventjes onder hoogspanning. Door de aanslag van Jemenitische Houthi-rebellen op een depot van Aramco verderop in Jeddah. De kopstukken van de sport gaven aan dat de race 'gewoon' door zou gaan maar de coureurs leken er anders over te denken.

Tot diep in de nacht overlegden de coureurs gezamenlijk in een klein zaaltje. Ze vormden een eenheid en de race leek eventjes op losse schroeven te staan. Formule 1-kopstukken Stefano Domenicali en Ross Brawn meldden zich bij de coureurs en even later kwamen ook de teambazen langs. Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto zou het circuit al hebben verlaten maar ook hij verscheen bij de coureurs.

Sterren

Vandaag gaat alles gewoon weer op normale wijze door. Binotto meldde zich zaterdagmiddag in de perszaal voor de gebruikelijke teambazenpersconferentie. Daar sprak hij zich uit over de coureursvergadering: "Het zijn twintig coureurs met allemaal een andere mening. Voor hen was het belangrijk om de juiste vragen te stellen en hun mening te bepalen. Ze zijn trouwens de sterren van onze sport, dus hun stem is belangrijk. Als Ferrari-teambaas vind ik dat we goed naar ze moeten luisteren. Maar we moeten ze ook vertellen waarom wij beslissingen nemen."

Garanties

De teambaas van de legendarische Italiaanse renstal dacht er niet aan om het discutabele land te verlaten. Binotto voelt zich zeer veilig op het Jeddah Corniche Circuit: "Wij hebben van de organisaties en de autoriteiten alle mogelijke garanties gekregen. Maar wij hebben ook besloten dat wij contact met elkaar houden voor als er updates over de situatie zijn. We nemen dat dan serieus maar we kijken ook naar de feiten. We moeten niet teveel theoretische vragen stellen, we hebben gesprekken gevoerd en garanties gekregen."

Wat een slap gelul allemaal joh. Ik kan me voorstellen dat iedereen zich in zo'n achterlijk land nog een beetje op de vlakte houdt. Maar als je er na dit weekend niemand meer over hoort met een andere mening dan zijn er flinke cheques uitgeschreven om men het zwijgen op te leggen. Dan hoeven we ook nooit geen enkel statement meer serieus te nemen.

Precies. Bij Ferrari staan we erom bekend dat we heel erg op de mening van onze coureurs zitten te wachten. Met name als het over Ferrari zelf gaat. Of liever nog, als de wagen rijdt als een vrachtwagen bijvoorbeeld. Altijd open voor constructieve feedback.
