Alonso vol vertrouwen: "Snelheid beter dan de resultaten zeggen"

Het team van Alpine begon vol ambitie aan het huidige seizoen. De Franse renstal wilde toeslaan onder de nieuwe reglementen maar vooralsnog is daar nog niet het gehoopte resultaat uit voortgekomen. In Saoedi-Arabië konden coureurs Fernando Alonso en Esteban Ocon aardig meekomen maar vochten ze vooral met elkaar.

De huidige reglementen waren de reden van de comeback tweevoudig wereldkampioen Alonso. De Spanjaard wil nog één keer goed voor de dag komen en hij hoopte met Alpine mee te kunnen doen voor de prijzen. Afgelopen jaar wilde hij warmdraaien om dit jaar toe te kunnen slaan. Bij de seizoensopener werd hij echter slechts negende en in Jeddah viel hij uit nadat hij een prachtig duel had uitgevochten met teammaat Ocon.

Bahrein

Alonso zelf ziet het allemaal echter zeer positief in. De Spaanse Alpine-coureur is van mening dat zijn seizoen vooralsnog op rolletjes loopt. Tegenover Motorsport.com is hij duidelijk: "Ik denk dat ik twee geweldige races achter de rug heb. Eerst in Bahrein maar daar hebben we de verkeerde strategie gebruikt door op gebruikte banden te starten. Dat zat mij de gehele wedstrijd in de weg net als de motor, die was daar ook niet geweldig."

Snelheid

In Jeddah leek Alonso op weg naar een aardige hoeveelheid punten maar problemen gooide roet in het eten. Hij verloor snelheid en kwam uiteindelijk tot stilstand in de pit entry. De Spanjaard baalt vanzelfsprekend maar denkt dat de snelheid heus aanwezig is. "De snelheid is beter dan de resultaten doen blijken. We hebben punten weggeven aan de mensen achter ons. We hebben echter nog een lange weg te gaan en het geluk gaat keren. Hopelijk krijgen wij in de toekomst zelf wat cadeautjes. Ik denk eerlijk gezegd dat ik zesde of zevende kon staan in het kampioenschap, maar daar sta ik niet."

Behoorlijke uitdaging om uit dat middenveld-mijnenveld te blijven. Maar ja, het biedt ook een enorm spektakel. Dat dan weer wel.

Het is een verademing om Fernando te zien racen maar het is toch wel jammer om te zien dat er veel te weinig snelheid in die Alpine zit.
Ze hebben wat pech gehad met de resultaten maar echte snelheid zie ik ook niet. Het gat naar de top is dusdanig groot dat ze het de komende jaren ook niet gaan dichten helaas.

  Ik vestig dan mijn hoop op het feit dat Alonso de snelheid wel denkt te zien. En hij zit er dichter, letterlijk.

N.a.v. de wintertest was ik pessimistisch, maar wat ik nu zie is redelijk tot goed. Veel heeft natuurlijk ook met het verwachtingspatroon te maken. Ik snap de post van Rimmer wel. Als je had gedacht dat ze mee konden vechten om overwinningen kom je nu heel erg bedrogen uit. Als je niets had verwacht, dan ziet het er nu heel goed uit.
Het lijkt erop dat ze samen met Haas en Alfa het 4e team zijn... met het verschil dat Schumacher en Zhou in mijn ogen duidelijk snelheid missen. Alpine heeft dus gewoon 2 ijzers in het vuur.

Ze staan er in ieder geval beter voor dan vorig jaar. Maar de titel? Ja die is praktisch onhaalbaar, ook de komende jaren.

  Ik verwachtte vechten voor overwinningen niet echt. Dat het een keer gebeuren kan rekening ik dan niet mee.
  Ik verwacht dat Alpine beter in het doorontwikkelen zal zijn dan Haas en Alfa Romeo. Als ze vierde worden zou dat een prima resultaat zijn.
