Wolff appt met Grosjean: ''We moeten je dit jaar in de auto krijgen"

Mercedes-baas Toto Wolff had voormalig Romain Grosjean een F1-test beloofd in één van de Silberpfeilen. Aanleiding voor dit 'cadeautje' was de bijna dodelijke crash van Grosjean op het Bahrein International Circuit in 2020. De Fransman, nu actief in de IndyCar, zegt dat de speciale test dit jaar waarschijnlijk gaat plaatsvinden.

"Ik weet dat iedereen naar de Mercedes-test vraagt. De test is nog niet geweest, maar we hebben er een helm voor klaarliggen'', tekende Formula1news.co.uk op.

Grosjean nam na de finalerace van het seizoen 2021 een aantal keer contact op met de Mercedes-chef. "Ik heb Toto een bericht gestuurd na Abu Dhabi", onthulde hij. "Ik liet een paar weken voorbij gaan en toen stuurde ik een bericht naar Toto en hij antwoordde en het begon met 'dank je' en toen was de laatste zin 'we moeten je dit jaar in die auto krijgen'. Dus ja, het het staat nog steeds op de planning."

De F1-test zou oorspronkelijk plaatsvinden in 2021 tijdens de Franse Grand Prix op Paul Ricard, maar dat kon geen doorgang vinden vanwege de reisrestricties en quarantineregels.

"Vorig jaar waren er een paar dingen die het niet gemakkelijk maakten. Dit jaar kan ik niet naar de Franse Grand Prix omdat we hetzelfde weekend racen in Iowa', legde hij uit. "Maar definitief, ja, Mercedes wil het graag doen, ik wil het graag doen, ook al zou mijn nek het begeven omdat ik daar een deel van de spier heb verloren. We willen het nog steeds doen en als het gebeurt, geweldig, maar de belangrijkste focus ligt nu op het winnen van races met Andretti."
