Alonso krijgt nieuwe krachtbron voor GP Australië

Fernando Alonso was in de Grand Prix van Saoedi-Arabië op weg naar een puntenfinish totdat de Spanjaard zijn Alpine-bolide aan de kant zette . Volgens het Franse team was de motor niet de hoofdoorzaak, maar toch moet die vervangen worden voor de Grand Prix van Australië aanstaand weekend.

"Het was de waterpomp”, zegt Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi over de boosdoener, geciteerd door Auto Hebdo. “Dit leidde tot een koelingsdefect en vervolgens begon een kettingreactie– de motor koelde minder, de olie warmde op, enz., waardoor er meer problemen ontstonden."

Op de vraag of Alonso noodgedwongen moest uitvallen zei Rossi het volgende: “Fernando kon blijven rijden en de motor werkte, maar uiteraard in minder dan ideale omstandigheden. We wilden hem liever later stoppen. De waterpomp was defect."

Alpine wilde geen risico nemen om het onderdeel te vervangen en koos liever voor een nieuwe power unit. "Het probleem is dat dit accessoire (waterpomp) in de motor is geïntegreerd. De waterpomp viel uit elkaar en viel in de motor. Als we het hadden willen repareren, hadden we de motor moeten openschroeven. Dus de motor is voor ons verloren."

Per seizoen mag een coureur drie motoren gebruiken. Wordt de limiet overschreden, dan volgt er een gridstraf van tien plaatsen. Voor Alonso is de kans dus heel groot dat hij een extra krachtbron moet inzetten in 2021, wat automatisch resulteert in een straf.

  Misschien had Renault nog een oude motor liggen en wilden ze die eerst opmaken. RedBull zei toen ze nog met Renault motoren reden dat ze een "nieuwe" motor kregen waar de schroeven al van verroest waren.

Eigenaardige breuk, zeker dat uit elkaar vallen - Dot zou wel de eerste betrouwvaarheidsupdate kunnen afdwingen. Dat de waterpomp in de ICE is geïntegreerd zal wel met plaats en gewichts besparing te maken hebben.

Een waterpomp valt toch niet onder de gelimiteerde onderdelen. Als ze de motor open schroeven en het onderdeel vervangen, dan mogen ze die gewoon weer in elkaar zetten en gebruiken. Denk dat het een ander probleem is. Maar hoe dan ook, het integreren van een bewegend onderdeel dat sneller kapot gaat dan de rest lijkt me niet echt verstandig. Nu snap ik dat 1 onderdeel altijd als eerste kapot moet gaan, maar een waterpomp gaat in een normale auto ook sneller kapot dan de rest.

  Dat zou vreemd zijn. Nadat Verstappen die 50g+ klapper had gemaakt, heeft Honda de hele motor uit elkaar gehaald om te kijken of dat de motor nog te gebruiken was. Dat zou dan ook niet nodig zijn geweest. Maar kan zijn dat de regels dit jaar anders zijn.

  Within two (2) hours of the end of the post-race parc fermé additional seals will be applied
  to all used power unit elements in order to ensure that they cannot be run or dismantled
  between Events. The sealing method must be agreed with the Technical Delegate.
  
  Ik denk dat na de klapper op Silverstone de powertraincomponenten (ICE, TC, MGU-K, MGU-H, ES etc) zijn gecontroleerd op bruikbaarheid.
