Grosjean ziet verschillende filosofieën bij Red Bull en Mercedes

De teams van Red Bull Racing en Mercedes vochten afgelopen seizoen een zeer beladen titelduel uit. Uiteindelijk kroonde Mercedes zich tot constructeurskampioen en werd Red Bull-coureur Max Verstappen wereldkampioen. Men hoopte stiekem op een herhaling van dit duel in 2022 maar dat komt er niet van.

Beide teams zijn op verschillende wijze uit de startblokken gekomen. Red Bull Racing is één van de koplopers maar men kampt met de nodige betrouwbaarheidsproblemen. Teambaas Christian Horner is van mening dat hij liever een snelle auto betrouwbaar moet maken in plaats van andersom. Constructeurskampioen Mercedes is op zijn beurt lastig aan het seizoen begonnen. De ploeg komt duidelijk snelheid tekort máár de auto is wel betrouwbaar.

Mentaliteiten

Beide teams werken dus volgens een compleet verschillende filosofie en dat is zeer interessant te noemen. Ook voormalig Formule 1-coureur, en huidig Indycar-ster, Romain Grosjean is het opgevallen. Op zijn YouTube-kanaal analyseert hij de boel: "Het is leuk om de verschillende mentaliteiten bij de tweede teams te zien. Persoonlijk denk ik wel dat ze allebei gelijk hebben want je hebt idealiter een snelle auto die ook nog eens zeer betrouwbaar is."

Ferrari

Grosjean ziet dat er een ander team op de grid is die aan het ideaalbeeld voldoet. Vanzelfsprekend gaat dit om Ferrari, de Italianen gaan ruim aan kop in de tussenstand. Grosjean vindt het niet meer dan logisch: "Men moet niet vergeten dat Red Bull en Mercedes tot eind vorig jaar vochten om de wereldtitel. Ferrari kon al heel vroeg beginnen aan de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe auto. Red Bull en Mercedes hadden deze luxe niet aangezien alle ballen werden gericht op de titelstrijd. Ferrari maakte de keuze om te focussen op dit jaar en die keuze betaalt zich uit."

Vanaf halverwege vorig jaar tot en met de wintertesten werd er voortdurend gezegd dat Mercedes zich veel eerder op de ontwikkeling van de 2022 auto was gaan richten dan Red Bull. De verwachting werd uitgesproken dat Mercedes daarom sterker zou startten dan Red Bull. Nu Mercedes met een auto is gekomen die niet vooruit te branden is, horen we uit alle kanten alleen nog maar het tegenovergestelde verhaaltje dat Mercedes juist pas heel laat aan de ontwikkeling van de 2022 auto kon beginnen doordat de titelstrijd van 2021 alle aandacht vroeg. Kennelijk is er behoefte aan verzachtende argumenten cq smoesjes.
