Wolff blijft realistisch: "Duurt wel eventjes voordat we de inhaalslag hebben gemaakt"

Regerend constructeurskampioen Mercedes had waarschijnlijk gehoopt op een iets betere seizoenstart. De Duitse renstal domineerde de sport de afgelopen seizoenen maar nu moeten ze de nodige snelheid toegeven op concurrenten Ferrari en Red Bull Racing. Aankomend weekend willen ze de stijgende lijn doorzetten.

Tijdens de afgelopen race in Australië ging het immers alweer iets beter met het team van Mercedes. Coureurs George Russell en Lewis Hamilton konden het tempo aardig volgen en profiteerden optimaal van de problemen van Max Verstappen. Russell kon mede door de uitvalbeurt van de Nederlander naar de derde plaats rijden. Het was zijn eerste podiumplek voor Mercedes en zijn teamgenoot Hamilton werd ook nog eens vierde.

Inhaalslag

Teambaas Toto Wolff was redelijk tevreden met het resultaat maar de Oostenrijker weet ook heus wel dat er nog iets moet gebeuren. In de tussentijd gaat het werk dan ook hard door. In de vooruitblik van Mercedes is Wolff er duidelijk over: "Tijdens het Paasweekend is er in de fabriek hard gewerkt aan verbeteringen en om alles klaar te krijgen voor de volgende race. Het laat onze toewijding zien om de zaak weer voor elkaar te krijgen. We moeten wel realistisch zijn want het zal wel eventjes duren voordat we de gewenste inhaalslag hebben gemaakt. Maar we leren elke race zoveel mogelijk."

Imola

Wolff kijkt wel uit naar het aankomende weekend. Het circuit van Imola valt bij veel liefhebbers immers nogal in de smaak, ook bij de Oostenrijker. "We kijken nu vooruit naar Imola en het eerste sprintweekend van het seizoen. Het is echt een historisch, ouderwets circuit met een uitdagende layout. De coureurs genieten daar echt van. De kwalificatie zal belangrijk worden op deze krappe baan. De vloeiende natuur van de baan zal de auto's echt uitdagen."

Wat hebben veel mensen toch met Imola? Toegegeven, een onboard rondje ziet er heel gaaf uit en ik kan me voorstellen dat het een gaaf circuit is om op te rijden.
Maar de races? Ik kan me amper spannende races op Imola herinneren omdat het na 1994 bijna niet meer mogelijk is om in te halen.
Natuurlijk had je dan in 2005 en 2006 een spannende situatie, maar ook daar werd er uiteindelijk niet ingehaald.
Uiteindelijk wordt het dan wel gewoon treintje rijden.
Dus waarom Imola dan zo speciaal is? Zeg het me maar.

  En dat geldt niet alleen voor Imola.
  Aan de toekomst heb je niks, het zijn de verhalen uit het verleden.
  Aan Imola kleeft het verhaal van Senna's dood.
  Monaco het eerste echte straten circuit ect.
  Het spreekt tot de verbeelding, al dan niet aangedikt.

  De nostalgische waarde snap ik wel, maar dat heb ik dan zelf nog eerder bij bijvoorbeeld Monaco (waar een klein foutje heel dichtbij is en grote gevolgen kan hebben). Maar ook Monza, Suzuka en Spa zijn voor mij nostalgie, en daar kun je wél goed inhalen!

  Inhalen is ook eerder een verwachting dan realiteit.
  De ander moet een fout maken of je moet meer lef hebben.
  Er zijn meer factoren dan alleen het soort baan waarop je rijdt.
  Een baan waar je nooit in kan halen ,heeft de breedte van slechts 1 bolide, en die heb je nog nooit gezien.

Grosjean kan beamen dat Mercedes nog een inhaalslag te maken heeft. Die heeft inmiddels met alle nieuwe sponsors en kleurenschema's al zijn 2de helm moeten spuiten door alle vertraging.

benieuwd hoeveel die inhaalslag kost.....
en dan wil je nog doorontwikkelen...........
en waar gaan ze die 25 a 30 pktjes vandaar halen .... niet want motor freeze
en snelheid halen uit chassis, gewichtsbesparing en brandstof kost ontiegelijk veel geld
