Horner trots op pole Verstappen: "Wel jammer voor Checo"

Red Bull Racing en Max Verstappen hebben de eerste slag geslagen in Imola. De Nederlandse regerend wereldkampioen pakte de pole in een zeer hectische kwalificatie. De weersomstandigheden veranderden de gehele tijd waardoor de sessie redelijk droog begon en drijfnat eindigde.

De derde en beslissende kwalificatiesessie werd gekenmerkt door drie rode vlaggen. Eerst stond Kevin Magnussen in het grind, daarna had Valtteri Bottas problemen en vervolgens bezocht ook Lando Norris de muur en het grind. Hierdoor kon Verstappen amper echt aanzetten en Sergio Perez al helemaal niet. De Mexicaan kwam in de tweede Red Bull niet verder dan de zevende plek.

Trots

Teambaas Christian Horner was na afloop tenminste redelijk tevreden met de vrijdagnamiddag. De Brit verscheen direct na de kwalificatie voor de microfoon van Sky Sports. Daar was hij trots op Verstappen: "Hij deed echt een super job. Het was een ongebruikelijke kwalificatie en was maar 1 rondje dat telde, het rondje dat we van het gas gingen. Tegen het einde van de sessie leek het erop dat we weer snel waren maar toen kwam er regen en een rode vlag. Jammer ook voor Checo, hij kon erbij zitten."

Balans

De Red Bulls hadden in eerste instantie moeite met het op temperatuur krijgen van hun banden. De Ferrari's leken dan ook de topfavoriet te zijn. Niets was echter minder waar en dat stemde Horner nogal tevreden: "Het lukte ons om een goede balans te vinden. Max kreeg er een super rondje uit op het juiste moment. Nu is de uitdaging wat we morgen gaan doen. We hebben in ieder geval een goede start. Als je naar onze relatieve snelheid kijkt, dan zijn we snel in de eerste sector en zeker sneller in de tweede sector. In de derde sector is het gelijk."
