Binotto schept duidelijkheid over Russische testcoureur Shwartzman

De oorlog in Oekraïne heeft ook gevolgen voor de sportwereld. In de Formule 1 besloot het team van Haas hun Russische coureur Nikita Mazepin te ontslaan en alle Russische sponsorstickers van de wagen te verwijderen. Daarnaast mogen Russische en Belarussische coureurs alleen deelnemen aan races als ze een document van de FIA hebben ondertekend.

Haas was echter niet het enige Formule 1-team met een Russische coureur onder contract. Ook het team van Ferrari heeft een Rus onder contract staan in de vorm van Robert Shwartzman. Het jonge talent is een testcoureur voor de Italiaanse ploeg en het was de bedoeling dat hij dit jaar in actie zou komen tijdens enkele trainingen, echter is het al geruime tijd stil omtrent de Rus.

Israël

Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto werd dan ook naar de plannen met Shwartzman gevraagd tijdens de teambazen-persconferentie. Binotto moest eventjes wakker worden maar gaf toen tegenover de internationale media aan geen problemen te zien: "Robert is geboren in Israël. Hij heeft dan ook een Israëlisch paspoort. Als je het over zijn licentie hebt, dan is hij ook geen Rus. Daarnaast was hij het ook eens met de Russische bedrijven die zijn, laten we zeggen overeenkomsten met hem verbraken."

Kansen

Shwartzman zal dus onder een Israëlische licentie actief blijven voor het team van Ferrari. Volgens Binotto is er dan ook helemaal niets veranderd aan de status van de Israëlische-Rus bij het team. Er liggen nog kansen: "Momenteel is hij nog steeds onze testcoureur en dat zal hij ook blijven. Als we in de toekomst een kans krijgen om hem te laten rijden, dan laten we hem waarschijnlijk ook rijden."

In het begin dacht ik dat het een Duitser was, toen zei men een Rus en nu blijkt het een Israëliër te zijn. Als hij het zelf maar weet.
