Vettel en Stroll bezorgen Aston Martin puntenfeest

Aston Martin kende een zeer zwak begin van 2021. Niet alleen vanwege de tijdelijke afwezigheid van Sebastian Vettel door corona, technische issues en brokken, maar vooral door het gebrek aan snelheid.

Na de dubbele puntenfinish in Imola ziet de wereld voor het roemruchte merk er een stuk rooskleurig uit en de renstal is daarmee als laatste team van de hatelijke nulscore af. Sebastian Vettel werd in listige omstandigheden achtste en Lance Stroll tiende.

Maar of de dubbele puntenfinish was gelukt als het droog was gebleven, betwijfelt de viervoudig kampioen. "Ik denk dat we het vandaag heel goed hebben gedaan”, begon Vettel bij F1TV. “Daarna was het overleven voor ons, wetende dat de pace niet heel sterk is.", concludeert de Duitser. "De omstandigheden hebben ons zeker geholpen om andere auto’s langer achter ons te houden."

Vettel begon in San Marino vanaf P13 en stootte na een goede start door naar P9 om uiteindelijk als achtste te finishen. "Meer zat er niet in voor ons. Ik lieg ook niet als ik zeg dat deze achtste plek als een overwinning voor ons voelt. Zeker omdat we dus met twee auto’s in de punten zijn gefinisht. We zijn hier heel blij mee."

Teamgenoot Stroll had een zeer drukke middag in Imola. De Canadees zat continu in gevecht rondom de tiende plek, waaronder een tijdje met zevenvoudig kampioen Lewis Hamilton. Uiteindelijk pakte hij het laatste punt. "Dat voelde goed", zei Stroll met een grote glimlach tegenover F1TV. "We verdienden een punt, helemaal met de druk achter ons gedurende de race. Het was erg intens en lastig van start tot finish door de natte omstandigheden. Ik ben blij."

"We hadden de snelheid. Beide wagens in de punten. Het was een erg positief weekend voor het team", sloot de Canadees af.

  Ja, die opsteker kon hij goed gebruiken. Sowieso wel fijn om te zien dat het middenveld heel afwisselend presteert. Zo kan iedereen gedurende het seizoen een paar goede dagen hebben en wat punten pakken. Beter dan dat één of twee teams steevast achteraan bungelen.

Zo rijdt ie de ene race een drol van een wedstrijd waarbij ie terugviel in oude patronen, doet ie 2 weken later het tegenovergestelde in een shitbox die er niet thuis hoort. Wat moet je toch denken van de man?

Mooie race van Vettel. In dit soort omstandigheden rijdt hij in de Aston Martin over het algemeen goede races. Blij met de puntjes! Verder is er nog enorm veel werk aan de winkel voor de droge omstandigheden, aangezien ze toen weer veel tekort kwamen

Dat heeft Vettel dan wel heel knap gedaan, dat hij eerst helemaal vanaf San Marino naar het circuit is gereden en zich vervolgens ook nog in de punten heeft gereden. ;)
