VeeKay in de wolken na poleposition op Barber: ''Dit is geweldig!''

“Dit is geweldig”, jubelt Rinus 'VeeKay' na zijn behaalde poleposition tijdens de Grand Prix van Alabama. ''Precies wat we nodig hadden. Voor wat betreft de race van morgen is het natuurlijk mijn doel om te winnen. Als je vanaf P1 start, moet je ook voor P1 aan de finish gaan. Een paar factoren spelen ons in de kaart: onze bolide ligt als een trein op rails en bovendien hoef ik niemand in te halen. Dat is ideaal op een circuit waar inhalen sowieso erg lastig is! Qua bandenmanagement heb ik een goed gevoel. Ik heb er zin in!''

In het laatste segment van de kwalificatie reed VeeKay een ronde van 1.06.2507, waarmee de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur Patricio O’Ward met ruim veertien honderdsten van een seconde wist af te troeven. ''Ik wist dat het erin zat, maar toch ging het beter dan verwacht. We hoopten van tevoren op deelname aan de Fast Six en toen ik het eenmaal had bereikt, viel de druk weg. Het voelde goed, het voelde eigenlijk al de hele dag goed. In de training was ik ook al de snelste, al moest ik daar een slag om de arm houden omdat niet iedereen een snelle ronde had kunnen voltooien vanwege een chaotische eindfase.''

VeeKay vervolgt verder over zijn heldemansrit: ''Tijdens de kwalificatie kon ik mijzelf telkens verbeteren. Het eerste segment was oké, maar niet perfect, omdat ik door het vuil moest tijdens mijn snelste ronde. Vlak voor mij was er namelijk iemand kortstondig van de baan geraakt. Ook in het tweede gedeelte kon ik nog niet het maximale eruit halen, maar desalniettemin bereikte ik de Fast Six. Toen wist ik dat P1 binnen de mogelijkheden lag.''

De Grand Prix van Alabama is zondagavond om 19.15 uur Nederlandse tijd en is te volgen via Ziggo Sport.

  Waar we het gisteren idd ook al over hadden, zo'n Jimmy Johnson of Simon Pagenaud mogen wat mij betreft wel plaats maken voor Rinus. Chip of Penske zijn mooie teams voor Veekay.

  ECR heeft een auto geleverd die op pole staat, dat is dan de snelste auto van het veld.
  
  ECR zal zich moeten verbeteren als team in strategie en pitstops.
  
  Het is een klein team, maar maken nu flink stappen, ook op de roadcoarses

  MacGyver@ over 1 ronde is het een auto waarmee je de snelste tijd zou kunnen rijden, maar ECR is helaas geen heel sterk team.
  
  Teamgenoot Daily is nergens te vinden op road en streetcourses. Waar ECR vaak last van heeft is bandenslijtage en slechte pitstops, en bandenslijtage is toch ook deels de dempers en dus de auto.
  
  Wel is ECR beter dan Juncos, dus ook de prestatie van Ilott dit weekend is super sterk te noemen.

  In een weekend zonder F1 mag er gewoon gepost worden met onderwerpen zoals FE, Indy en DTM. Eigenlijk als de F1 rijdt mag dat ook. Mag wat zeg ik, dat moet gewoon.
