Steiner vindt Haas juist Amerikaans: "Er is geen druk"

Dit weekend staat de eerste Grand Prix op Amerikaans grondgebied van het jaar op het programma. In Miami zal men de gelijknamige Grand Prix afwerken om daarna in het najaar terug te keren naar het land voor de Amerikaanse Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. De hype voor de race in Miami is in ieder geval groot.

De Grand Prix is de thuisrace van slechts één team op de grid. Het team van Haas zal dit weekend voor het eigen publiek laten zien wat ze waard zijn. Opvallend genoeg komt het team niet Amerikaans over, de teambaas is een Italiaan en de coureurs komen uit Duitsland en Denemarken. Ook een Amerikaanse hoofdsponsor ontbreekt, vorig jaar waren de wagens zelfs in Russische kleuren gehuld vanwege de hoofdsponsor uit het discutabele land.

Interesse

Toch ervaart men bij Haas geen druk vanuit de hoge gelederen van de sport of de hoge heren van het team zelf. Opvallend aangezien de sport steeds populairder wordt in de Verenigde Staten. Teambaas Günther Steiner is er duidelijk over bij de Italiaanse tak van Motorsport.com: "Er is geen druk van bovenaf en die hoeft er ook niet te zijn. We zijn momenteel wel bezig met een aantal zaken in Amerika, dat kost wel tijd. De populariteit is de afgelopen twee jaar pas gestegen en het duurt eventjes om alles op gang te krijgen. Er is interesse, nu moeten we sponsors binnen halen."

Amerikaans

Steiner kan zich ook niet vinden in de bewering dat het team van Haas geen Amerikaanse identiteit uitstraalt naar de buitenwereld. De bekende Italiaan denkt zelfs dat dit juist wel het geval is bij zijn renstal. Steiner ziet het zijn ploeg als heel Amerikaans: "We bevinden ons in de VS met Haas CMC en ook met Haas Tooling. Dat zijn allebei gewoon wel Amerikaanse bedrijven. Je kunt dan ook niet Amerikaanser zijn dan wij zijn."
