Wolff tempert verwachtingen over updates: "Soort live experiment"

Regerend constructeurskampioen Mercedes is niet op de gewenste wijze aan het huidige seizoen begonnen. De bolide van de Duitse renstal kampt met de nodige problemen en ze komen snelheid tekort ten opzichte van koplopers Ferrari en Red Bull Racing. In Miami wil men graag weer beter voor de dag komen.

Mercedes neemt dan ook enkele updates mee naar het gloednieuwe circuit in de staat Florida. Men zoekt vooral naar een oplossing om van de porpoising-problematiek af te komen. De bolides van Lewis Hamilton en George Russell hebben zeer veel last van het gehobbel, ze ondervinden ook op fysiek vlak nogal wat hinder van de problemen.

Experiment

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff weet echter nog niet of de updates in Miami überhaupt effect gaan hebben. De Oostenrijker maakt zich aardig wat zorgen en die deelt hij met Motorsport.com: "We proberen een oplossing te vinden, eentje die niet alleen het gehobbel verwerkt. We kunnen de vloer wel stijver maken maar dan verliezen we downforce. Wel wordt de wagen er stabieler door maar dat is niet de richting die we op willen gaan. Aangezien testen niet is toegestaan is elk weekend jammer genoeg een soort live experiment."

Trail and error

De problemen met de porpoising zijn een echt hoofdpijndossier voor Wolff en zijn mensen. De problemen zijn namelijk zeer lastig na te maken waardoor alles een vraagteken blijft. "We kunnen het stuiteren niet nabootsen in de windtunnel. Daarom is het net als vroeger 'trail and error'. Wat werkt er in de praktijk? We kijken daarom naar de verschillende opties waarvan wij denken dat ze de problemen voor de lange termijn kunnen oplossen zonder dat we downforce verliezen door de auto te verhogen of de vloer te verstevigen. Dit weekend komen er updates. De ware performance zal echter niet direct te zien zijn."

Misschien was het een idee om net als RB toch met een verstevigde en zwaardere vloer te komen.
Zeker als je daarmee porpoising vermindert en niet met die idiote hoge rijhoogte hoeft te werken.
Dan weegt het maar 10 kilo meer en lijkt het aanvankelijk zinloos.
Als dat helpt kan je je namelijk ook gaan richten op andere prestaties van de auto. Zodra je het pakket dan beter werkend krijgt komt ook het begrip.
Dan kan je in een later stadium weer gaan kijken naar gewicht besparen en evt de vloer weer lichter maken.
Die tactiek kost je waarschijnlijk meer tijd en misschien ook wel geld dan hopen op die ene goede gok de komende 1 a 2 races. Maar die tactiek stelt je wel in staat om tenminste rust en stabiliteit te vinden in die auto. Alleen dat al kan toch voor veel betere prestaties zorgen. Je geeft daarmee natuurlijk wel 2022 op maar dat is het seizoen nu min of meer ook al dus ik zou persoonlijk voor zekerheid gaan.

  Eigenlijk staat Mercedes helemaal niet zo ver weg dacht ik. 37 punten voor Russel en 47 voor Hamilton. Staat me bij dat Voor Silverstone Verstappen ook ruim 40 punten voor stond. Die is toen verdampt tot 0 punten na de voorlaatste race.
  
  Er is een wonder voor nodig, namelijk dat de updat nu extreem uitpakt, maar dan is alles mogelijk en gaat de propaganda en de trukendoos weer open bij Mercedes.
  
  Overigens heeft de geschiedenis anders aangetoond. Terug aan de top komen kost langer meestal.

Ik ben wel een beetje klaar met die experimenten dit jaar. Het wordt tijd om te presteren of iig 2 auto’s te hebben waar de coureurs mee kunnen aanvallen.
