Leclerc kijkt in zijn spiegel: "Als Red Bull dichtbij zit wordt het lastig"

Wereldkampioenschapsleider Charles Leclerc start vanavond op de pole position in Miami. De Monegaskische Ferrari-coureur deelt de eerste startrij met zijn teamgenoot Carlos Sainz. Maar hij zal zich meer zorgen maken over auto's die achter hem starten, de tweede startrij wordt namelijk bevolkt door de Red Bulls.

Red Bull-coureur Max Verstappen kon door problemen op de vrijdag maar weinig rondjes rijden maar in de kwalificatie stond hij er weer. Samen met teamgenoot Sergio Perez zal hij vandaag weer de aanval gaan openen op de grote concurrenten van het team van Ferrari. De Italiaanse renstal is zich bewust van dit feit en zal gaan verdedigen.

Pace

Leclerc wil zich op zijn beurt niet te druk maken over de concurrentie. De Monegask weet dondersgoed dat het een stevig duel zal gaan worden. Op de persconferentie voor de top drie was hij helder: "Als ze dichtbij zitten, dan gaat het lastig worden voor ons. Maar wij hebben voordeel in de bochten, hopelijk zorgt dat ervoor dat ze te ver achter liggen op de rechte stukken als ze willen inhalen. Alleen de tijd gaat het ons vertellen en dat zien we pas in de race. De pace is er in ieder geval, dus we focussen ons op onszelf."

Pakket

De WK-leider barst in ieder geval van het zelfvertrouwen in Miami. De Ferrari werkt naar behoren en Leclerc denkt dat dit allemaal in zijn voordeel gaat werken. Hij heeft er vertrouwen in: "Heel erg veel zelfs. We hebben een enorm sterk pakket, het werkt naar behoren in alle omstandigheden. Dat is echt een goed teken voor de toekomst. Maar zoals ik al vaker heb gezegd, ik denk dat de upgrades dit jaar heel erg belangrijk zullen zijn."

Ik heb gelezen dat Ferrari zn low downforce vleuvel niet gebruikt voor de race, ze hebben nu dezelfde vleugel als in Imola voor de kwali en race gekozen. Dit vanwege de lage grip en gladde asfalt op de baan. Ze offeren nu wat topsnelheid op om lagere banden slijtage te hebben

Ik ben bang dat Ferrari wederom een verkeerde keuze heeft gemaakt door zich te focussen op de snelheid in de bochten. Daardoor hebben ze de overwinning zo goed als in de schoot van Max Verstappen geworpen. Waar ik het meeste van opkijk is dat low-downforce pakket die zij meegenomen hebben, zich niet vertaald in een hogere snelheid op de lange rechte stukken.
