Ricciardo kritisch op asfalt Miami: "Deed mij denken aan mijn Australische boerderij"

De Grand Prix van Miami debuteerde afgelopen weekend op de Formule 1-kalender. De race was een enorm succes en de grote aantallen fans en VIPs leken zich enorm te vermaken tijdens de wedstrijd. Op de baan was het echter loodzwaar, de tropische hitte en de lastige ondergrond maakten het een uitputtingsslag.

De coureurs waren veel minder complimenteus over het gloednieuwe circuit rondom het Hard Rock Stadium. Vooral het asfalt kreeg fikse kritiek van vrijwel elke coureur. De organisatie probeerde de problemen nog enigszins op te lossen met een nieuwe laag asfalt maar het mocht niet baten, de stevige kritiek van de coureurs bleef aanwezig.

Boerderij

Ook McLaren-coureur Daniel Ricciardo was niet geheel tevreden met het circuit. De Australiër werd er na afloop van de Grand Prix naar gevraagd en was er tegenover internationale media glashelder over toen hem werd gevraagd of deze ondergrond wel acceptabel was: "Ik wil graag nee zeggen maar misschien komen we dan verwend over. Maar letten we het zo zeggen, voor wat we gewend zijn was dit meer een soort outback. Het deed mij denken aan de ondergrond van mijn Australische boerderij, met allemaal los gravel. Het is leuk in een off-roader maar deze Pirelli's vinden het niet heel leuk."

Onmogelijk

De moeilijke asfalt laag zorgde ervoor dat inhalen op sommige punten zeer gevaarlijk was. Ricciardo zag het om hem heen flink mis gaan: "Het zou leuk zijn als het iets anders was en we meer van de baan konden gebruiken. Wanneer je iemand probeert te volgen wil je wijder rijden, een beetje heen en weer gaan. Maar wanneer je dat probeert rijd je praktisch off track. Ik zag mensen een move uitvoeren en toen crashen. Bij Vettel was er bijvoorbeeld geen grip aan de binnenkant. Het zorgde ervoor dat een strakke race onmogelijk werd."

Vanuit de lucht ziet dit circuit er best gaaf uit......nu we de race hebben gezien, toch zeker met die smalle rotstukken, vind ik dat dit de laatste keer moet zijn dat de F1 daar nog neerstrijkt.

Nou ben ik sowieso toch al niet te spreken over die stratencircuits.

  De layout is ok. Er zitten een aantal bochten combinaties die lastig zijn. Het is teniet gedaan door hoe de staat van de baan is.

Toch bijzonder dat enerzijds het asfalt zo slecht bleek te zijn, en Ferrari en Red Bull tegen de voorspellingen van Pirelli in veel langer door konden rijden op hun eerste setje mediums. Notabene is de auto in die eerste fase van de race zwaar door de brandstof en dus extra zwaar voor de banden.

  Das al pure survival op droog wegdek, laat staan op nat. O.a. de afslag naar Mechelen vanaf de ring Antwerpen(komend uit NL) is mooi glad en knijpt ook nog eens 😂
