Magnussen kijkt terug op éénmalig Indycar-avontuur: "Het was zó zwaar!"

Kevin Magnussen keerde dit seizoen terug in de Formule 1. De Deense coureur werd door het team van Haas opgetrommeld om de ontslagen Nikita Mazepin te vervangen. Magnussen presteert vooralsnog fantastisch en scoorde alle punten voor Haas in het huidige seizoen. Zijn afwezigheid van één jaar heeft hem overduidelijk goed gedaan.

Nadat Magnussen eind 2020 geen contract verlenging kreeg bij het team van Haas moest hij opzoek naar een nieuw avontuur. De Deen vertrok naar Amerika en ging daar racen in de IMSA-klasse voor het team van Chip Ganassi. Daarnaast maakte hij op Road America ook eenmaal zijn opwachting in de Indycars.

Sindsdien heeft Magnussen zeer veel respect voor de coureurs in die klasse. Tegenover Racefans legt de Haas-coureur het verschil uit tussen de Formule 1 en de Indycars: "Het grootste verschil voor mij was het rijden zonder power steering. Het voelde zo bizar. Ik was gewend aan het gevoel van een Formule 1-auto, dat is zó verschillend vergeleken met een Indycar. Toen ik die kans kreeg was het slechts een paar dagen voor de race. Ik had geen voorbereidingstijd, geen simulator gewoon niets. Dus de eerste keer in de Indycar was in de training. Ik zei ja want waarom niet? Het was enorm zwaar."

Misschien wil Gene Haas K-Mag wel een auto sponsoren in Indycar, mocht hij op een dag nogmaals worden vervangen in F1.

Gene wou dat ook doen voor Grosjean, voordat de Bahrein crash plaats vond. Daarna roepte Gene: Ik ga niet Romains doodskist sponsoren.
