Ricciardo reageert op kritiek van Brown: "Dat is niet onjuist"

Daniel Ricciardo heeft al flink wat jaren ervaring in de Formule 1 maar staat dit seizoen onder grote druk. De altijd lachende Australiër kent in zijn tweede jaar bij McLaren nog geen grote successen en daarnaast is zijn achterstand op teamgenoot Lando Norris nogal fors. 

Ook bij Ricciardo's team McLaren is men inmiddels behoorlijk kritisch op de prestaties van de Australische coureur. CEO Zak Brown sprak zich eerder deze week nogal stevig uit over Ricciardo. De Amerikaan was van mening dat Ricciardo nog niet bepaald aan de verwachtingen van McLaren voldeed. Het waren opvallende woorden en daarnaast sprak Brown zich ook nog eens uit in het voordeel van Norris.

Onjuist

Ricciardo zelf heeft de woorden van zijn baas ook gehoord. In Monaco werd Ricciardo deze ochtend geconfronteerd met de uitspraken van Brown. Tijdens de persconferentie sprak hij zich uit tegenover de internationale pers: "Het is niet onjuist. Maar ik vat dat soort opmerkingen niet persoonlijk op. Het is zeker af en toe een uitdaging. Niemand is strenger voor mij dan ikzelf en we werken er ook aan. Dit team wil dat en ik wil het ook."

Antwoorden

Opvallend genoeg lijkt het erop dat de bolide van McLaren helemaal geen slechte auto is. Teammaat Norris presteert er immers nogal sterk mee en bereikte dit seizoen zelfs al het podium. Ricciardo zoekt op zijn beurt naar antwoorden: "Ik wil meer uit de auto halen. De ene keer weet ik wat er aan de hand is maar de andere keer niet. Soms ging het nog niet zoals we wilden. Het is altijd lastig geweest voor mij om één te worden met de auto. Het is best moeilijk om er spectaculaire rondjes uit te persen. Ik werk er nog steeds hard aan. Ik zou graag willen zeggen dat ik elke race sneller wordt, maar het is een proces."

      Ricciardo signed a three-year contract with the team that keeps him there until the end of 2023.

      Ik zou zeggen als hij dit jaar nog steeds slecht voor de dag komt, is het exit.

      Hij heeft nog een contract tot eind volgend jaar.

      Ik denk overigens dat al die F1 geruchten over de Vries, uiteindelijk tot helemaal Nycks gaan leiden.

      Dat hangt van je verwachtingen af. Gezien vorig jaar had ik al geen hoge verwachtingen.

      Als er iemand is die de verwachtingen die ik had niet helemaal waarmaakt dan is dat Sainz.

    Nu een crash in VT2. Het team vraagt als eerst of de auto OK is, Ricciardo zegt met een sneer: I'M OK! Oeps... ook niet chique van McLaren.

    Maar hier scoort ie geen punten mee. Vind het echt jammer dat hij laatste jaren zo tegenvalt.
