Horner wijst Ferrari nog niet als favoriet aan: "Temperaturen zijn wederom hoog"

Max Verstappen moest in de eerste twee vrije trainingen in Monaco tijd toegeven op de snellere Ferrari's. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur was zelfs langzamer dan zijn teamgenoot Sergio Perez. Bij Red Bull maakt niemand zich nog zorgen, al lijkt de Italiaanse concurrent wel heel erg sterk.

Al in de eerste training was het duidelijk dat Ferrari aardig op dreef was. Charles Leclerc was snel in zijn eigen land en hij gaf die snelheid een vervolg in de tweede training. Verstappen moest op zijn beurt de nodige tijd toegeven op de concurrentie, het verschil was niet bijster groot maar toch weet men bij Red Bull dat er iets moet gebeuren.

Ervaring

Tijdens de trainingen maakte Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner zich nog maar weinig zorgen. De Brit ziet dat Verstappen geduldiger gedraagt dan voorheen. Voorafgaand de tweede training sprak Horner zich al complimenteus uit bij zijn landgenoten van Sky Sports: "Max speelt echt een langer spel. Ik denk dat het ook te maken heeft met de nodige ervaring en hij heeft natuurlijk ook al zijn eerste titel binnen."

Favoriet

Ook in Monaco verwacht Horner kansen, ondanks dat Ferrari sneller was. De Brit denkt dat er nog genoeg kan gebeuren in de straten van het bekende prinsdom: "Als je kijkt naar het afgelopen weekend, dan zou je je geld op Ferrari zetten. Maar hier zijn de temperaturen wederom zeer hoog. Alles zal gaan afhangen van de setup van onze wagens, de auto's zijn ook nog zo enorm nieuw. In deze straten zijn ze ook nog eens heel erg groot waardoor er van alles kan gebeuren."

  Ferrari is echt sterk over een rondje maar dat gaat dit seizoen wel een beetje ten koste van de slijtage in de race.
  In Monaco is het echter het aller belangrijkste om snel over een rondje te zijn.
  De kaarten lijken goed geschud voor Ferrari maar de druk staat er wel vol op. Ze moeten dit weekend echt winnen en liefst een 1-2 want hoewel Barcelona grote lichtpunten kende telt uiteindelijk alleen het resultaat.
  Resultaat is eigenlijk ook het toverwoord bij RB dit weekend.
  Ze hebben volgens Horner heel veel data verzameld en volgens hem komt het helemaal goed morgen maar ik denk dat ze stiekem wel rekening houden met een te sterk Ferrari.
  Max moet gewoon P2 of P3 trainen en zondag P3 pakken. En dat alles zonder schade te rijden. Dan kom je gewoon heel goed weg. In Monaco valt dit jaar meer te verliezen dan te winnen. Voor iedereen. Schadevrij = goedkoop weekend = ruimte voor ontwikkeling.
  Hopelijk heeft Max geleerd van de vele horror races die hij heeft gehad in Monaco. Wie van de mannen durft het verst op de limiet te gaan? Wie speelt dan toch weer alles of niets? Wie houdt de focus om de marges in acht te nemen en kan leven met p2 of p3?

  Als de Leclerc zijn Monaco traditie in stand houdt, heeft Verstappen van hem weinig te vrezen. Ter daarbij op dat Sainz dit seizoen ook al moeite heeft om probleemloos door een race weekend te komen en de kansen zijn best groot op een één-twee voor Red Bull. :-)

  @Rimmer zowel Max als ook Leclerc weten dat je in VT eigenlijk alleen maar kunt verliezen. Ik vermoed dat Max zich flink ingehouden heeft. Maar ben het met je eens dat Ferrari erg sterk oogt over één rondje.

  Toch heeft Max 4 GP's gewonnen en Leclerc 2
  
  Was en ondanks dat Max een keer meer uitviel staat hij dus ook voor in het kampioenschap

  Daar heb je wel gelijk in maar die overwinningen kwamen wel op circuits waar inhalen mogelijk is. In Monaco is pole trainen en een goede start vrijwel garantie voor de overwinning. Alleen strategie en pitstops kunnen hier nog iets betekenen. Of een safety car situatie...
