Horner trots op team: "Dit is een fenomenaal teamresultaat"

Red Bull Racing stond voor een lastige klus in de straten van Monaco. Sergio Perez en Max Verstappen kenden een moeilijke kwalificatie en startten de race vanaf de derde en vierde plaats. Na een bizarre race vol oponthoud wist Perez als winnaar uit de bus te komen en werd Verstappen derde.

Perez profiteerde optimaal van een perfecte dubbele pitstop bij Red Bull en een mislukte strategie bij concurrent Ferrari. Hierdoor vond de Mexicaan zich terug aan de kop van het veld en kon men gaan hopen. Tijdens de rode vlag besloot men te wisselen naar de mediumbanden en bracht Perez de zege mee naar huis.

Mediums

Na afloop was de opluchting enorm groot bij de Oostenrijkse renstal. Teambaas Christian Horner ging zelf mee naar het podium maar besprak de bandenkeuze eerst nog eventjes met Sky Sports: "We wilden niet voor een klus te komen staan bij de herstart en we dachten dat de mediums goed genoeg zouden zijn. Toen Checo zich verremde kwam hij onder grote druk te staan. Ik ben zo trots op hem vandaag!"

Teamwork

Perez hield de jagende Carlos Sainz achter zich terwijl Verstappen daarachter thuisfavoriet Leclerc achter zich wist te houden. De Ferrari's waren sneller maar de Red Bulls slimmer. Horner: "Ik denk niet dat we de snelste auto hadden hier maar strategisch gezien hadden we het voor elkaar. De dubbele pitstop draait compleet om het teamwork. Het draaide daarna om de inlap en de outlap. Checo lag aan de leiding in zijn outlap en Max was er ook bijna langs. Dit was een fenomenaal teamresultaat."

Nou Ferrari heeft protest aangetekend omdat verstappen bij het uitgaan van de pits over de lijn zou zijn gereden. Red bull zal dan wel weer gaan klagen over het missen van de weegbrug. En zo is het moddergooien begonnen.
