Leclerc bewust van gevaren demoruns: "In de toekomst twee keer over nadenken"

Charles Leclerc kende afgelopen maand een ongelukkig moment tijdens de historische Grand Prix in Monaco. Tijdens het bijzondere evenement in zijn thuisland ging het pijnlijk mis voor de Ferrari-coureur tijdens een demonstratierondje. Leclerc bestuurde de Ferrari 321B3 waarmee Niki Lauda in 1974 reed, het eervolle rondje liep echter in de soep.

Leclerc gaf aardig gas in de legendarische bolide. Het was duidelijk dat hij voorzichtig deed maar het bleek tevergeefs want in Rascasse ging het helemaal mis. De Monegask wilde aanremmen voor de bocht maar kwam achterstevoren terecht in de vangrails. Hij was ongedeerd maar de bolide was wel zwaar beschadigd.

Werk

Achteraf bleek dat de crash niet Leclercs schuld was, er was iets kapot gegaan aan de auto. Men vroeg zich af of de demorun van Leclerc wel zo'n slim idee was, het had immers ook anders kunnen aflopen. Leclerc is er eerlijk over tegenover de internationale media: "Om eerlijk te zijn, ik denk dat alle checks voorafgaand de run waren uitgevoerd. Natuurlijk had ik een shakedown gedaan op de donderdag voor de run. Er ging iets mis met een schroef van de rempedalen en dat kan je niet weten. Ik vecht om het wereldkampioenschap, dus ik zal er in de toekomst twee keer over nadenken. Maar het is onderdeel van ons werk."

Balans

Toch hoopt Leclerc dat hij in de toekomst weer achter het stuur van een klassieke bolide mag kruipen. De Monegask beseft zich wel dat hij dit goed moet timen: "Het is altijd een eer en ik ben altijd blij en trots als ik dit soort auto's mag besturen. Maar ja, je moet altijd een balans vinden. Al helemaal wanneer je vecht voor de wereldtitel en het gaat ook over de veiligheid in het algemeen. Ik had heel erg veel lol maar het was gewoon ongelukkig."

Tsja. Nieuwswaarde? Want dan kun je niks meer als coureur. Fietsen? Stel je voor dat je valt. Op vrijdagavond in de lift? Beter niet, stel je voor dat je vast komt te zitten en de kwali mist. Achter iemand lopen die een banaan eet? Link hoor, met hetzelfde gemak gooit ie de schil voor je voeten en breek je een enkel. Mijn tip; zo weinig mogelijk thuis zijn, daar gebeuren de meeste ongelukken tenslotte…😬🤭

  Niki Lauda had in 1974 met deze auto maar liefst 8 DNF's in 15 races...

  Mooi dat je dat even opzoekt, dat kan ik wel smaken.
  
  Feit is dat met dergelijke bolides (snel) rijden meer risico inhoudt dan de lift pakken of een fietstochtje maken, dus begrijp ik wel de redenering van Charles. Stel nu dat hij frontaal de rail had ingegaan, dan had dat wel gevolgen kunnen hebben met die korte neus en weinig bescherming. Bij het exploderen van de schijven heeft hij de bolide gespind en dat was een zeer goeie (gelukkige) reflex. Het WK had een volledig andere wending kunnen nemen en de vervanging is ook geen evidentie nu Ferrari het goed doet.
