Leclerc verrast zichzelf: "Deze had ik niet verwacht!"

Charles Leclerc schreef vanmiddag geschiedenis door als eerste coureur in de geschiedenis voor de tweede keer pole position te pakken in Azerbeidzjan. De Monegaskische Ferrari-coureur reed een magische ronde en verpulverde de snelste tijd die op dat moment op naam stond van teamgenoot Carlos Sainz.

Leclerc deelt morgen de eerste startrij met de Red Bull van Sergio Perez. Vlak achter hem start Leclercs grote titelrivaal Max Verstappen. Tegenover interviewer van dienst Johnny Herbert toonde Leclerc veel opluchting: "Dit voelt goed! Alle poles voelen goed maar deze had ik niet verwacht. Dat omdat de Red Bulls heel erg sterk waren tijdens de eerste en de tweede kwalificatiesessie."

De pole position was een grote verrassing voor Leclerc. De snelheid van Red Bull was inderdaad zeer goed maar de Monegask liet andermaal zien dat hij zeer sterk kan kwalificeren. "Ik had heel erg veel moeite. Maar in de laatste ronde kwam alles echt samen. Het lukte mij om een goede ronde voor elkaar te krijgen en ik ben zo enorm blij! Ik heb dan ook heel erg veel zin in de dag van morgen."

Banden

Leclerc leeft dan ook met veel vertrouwen toe naar de race. Toch weet de Monegask wat hij kan verwachten van de dag van morgen, hij wil niet te grote woorden gebruiken. "We krijgen morgen veel antwoorden want het bandenmanagement is hier een belangrijk ding. In Barcelona en in Monaco ging dat heel erg goed, in Monaco was dat echter een beetje moeilijk te zien. De pace is erop vooruit gegaan sinds onze update. Morgen wordt dan ook heel interessant."

Ik zie, gezien de topsnelheid en DRS, Red Bull morgen toch wel als favoriet.
Maar wij Tifosi zijn vaak een ander slag, Jean Alesi is extreem geliefd en een Ferrari held voor het leven bij de Tifosi, met 1 overwinning, qua emotie op gelijke hoogte met Der Meister, 5 titels.

Deze pole vond ik zeer knap van Leclerc. Het leek dicht op elkaar te zitten en toch weet hij er in sector 2 veel uit te halen.

Hopelijk morgen een toffe race. Maar dat is in Baku meestal wel het geval.

De emotie die Charles brengt met die 'win it or bin it' rondjes, Villeneuve waardig, is geweldig, dat er zondag dan wel eens een teleurstelling is, so be it.
Charles is een fenomeen met die rode wagen, op een manier die alleen Ferrari kan, vreugde, drama, teleurstelling, maar Charles' kwali rondjes staan op eenzame hoogte.

  Charles is gewoon de beste qualifier op dit moment. Over een rondje wat mij betreft al een fenomeen. Of het vruchten afwerpt is een tweede. Hij moet echt gaan werken aan bandenmanagment en misschien een minder agressieve afstelling. Denk ik.

  Och amico, ik zou willen dat ik het zo kalm kan beschouwen als jij. Ik ben het eens met veel van wat je schrijft, maar Ferrari MOET morgen wel winnen voor wat vreugde in huize Snelle. Eigenlijk zit ik nu in een hotel op de Canarische weilanden, maar je snapt mijn punt. De afgelopen twee overwinningen die we hebben verloren, dienen danig goed gemaakt te worden. Dit kan zomaar ons jaar zijn hè?!

  Volgens hoofd GT Sports Antonello Coletta, zou dat eind deze maand moeten gebeuren.
  Er gaat wel een gerucht wb. de bezetting van de Hypercar, mocht Alpine in zee gaan met Piastri zou Ferrari Alonso graag inlijven voor haar WEC Hypercar programma.
  Alonso die met Ferrari Le Mans wint, dat zou wel wat zijn.
