Horner hoopvol: "Zeer indrukwekkende kwalificatie van Verstappen"

Max Verstappen start de Grand Prix van Canada vanavond vanaf de pole position. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur was in de natte kwalificatie haast onverslaanbaar en dat liet een diepe indruk achter. Verstappen weet eveneens dat zijn titelrivalen Sergio Perez en Charles Leclerc ver naar achteren starten.

Vrijwel de gehele kwalificatie heerste Verstappen. De Nederlandse coureur was vrijwel de gehele sessie de snelste en zijn pole kwam eigenlijk nooit in gevaar. Allen Carlos Sainz leek in de laatste seconden van de kwalificatie nog een bedreiging te kunnen vormen. De Spanjaard maakte vervolgens een foutje en ook de vliegende Fernando Alonso kwam niet in de buurt van Verstappen.

Indrukwekkend

Bij Verstappens team Red Bull was men ook zeer tevreden met de kwalificatie. Teambaas Christian Horner was loven toen hij zich na afloop uitsprak tegenover Motorsport.com: "Dit was een zeer indrukwekkend kwalificatie van Max. Ondanks de omstandigheden had het het circuit tijdens alle drie de sessies goed door. Als een baan droger en sneller wordt, dan kan het lastig zijn om een sterke tijd te rijden. Het gehele team heeft goed werk geleverd om ervoor te zorgen dat wij hier op de pole position staan."

Perez

Het enige smetje van de kwalificatie was voor Red Bull de crash van Perez. De Mexicaan blokkeerde in Q2 en raakte de muur. Horner vindt het jammer: "Het was heel erg onfortuinlijk voor Checo. Ik denk dat hij verkeerd inschatte waar hij moest remmen. Daarna eindigde hij in de baanafzetting. De auto kwam klem te zitten in het kunststof en hij kon niet meer achteruit rijden voor een nieuwe poging. Het is een baan waar je kan inhalen dus hopelijk kan hij als nog veel punten scoren."

In moeilijke omstandigheden komt de auto naar Max toe, en kan hij lekker met de achterkant spelen wat hem (itt Checo) gewoon enorm goed ligt.
