Alonso verklaart tegenvallende race: "Enige antwoord is de motor"

Fernando Alonso was in Canada één van de smaakmakers van het weekend. De Spaanse Alpine-coureur kwalificeerde zich sensationeel als tweede maar in de race ging het wat minder. Alonso behield zijn podiumpositie in de openingsfase maar viel daarna terug tot de zevende plaats. Enkele uren na de race werd dat de negende plaats na een tijdstraf.

Alonso was in de openingsfase snel en kon het tempo van onder andere Lewis Hamilton aardig bijhouden. Maar daarna zakte zijn performance volledig in en kwam hij als zevende over de streep. Hij kreeg een tijdstraf nadat hij onnodig slingerde in een duel met Alfa Romeo-coureur Valtteri Bottas. De negende plaats was het teleurstellende resultaat.

Motor

Alonso denkt dat er meer mogelijk was. De Spanjaard kampte namelijk met problemen en die doet hij uit de doeken in gesprek met Motorsport.com. Hij legt de reden van het tegenvallende resultaat uit: "Het enige antwoord is de motor. We probeerden het wel op te lossen maar het lukte niet. Ik ben allang blij dat ik de auto niet naast de baan moest zetten. We hebben zo toch nog punten gepakt. Tot aan het probleem vochten we echt voor het podium. Ik voelde mij sterk in het duel met Hamilton maar we konden de snelheid van Verstappen en Sainz niet bijhouden.

DRS

De Spaanse tweevoudig wereldkampioen is ervan overtuigd dat hij Hamilton kon verslaan. De problemen zorgde ervoor dat hij het lastig kreeg: "Ik kon de Mercedes wel achter mij houden. De VSC's veranderden de race maar de derde of vierde plek was nog mogelijk. Maar daarna kwam het motorprobleem. Ik probeerde het te overleven. Ik reed als een kamikaze door de bochten om op tijd bij het DRS-detectiepunt te komen. Dat was namelijk het enige dat mijn positie veilig hield."

Hwr zal best, maar tactisch zat het ook gewoon niet goed, je ziet dat ze al ruim 10 jaar niet meer deze kans hebben gehad. strategie is tegenwoordig ook belangrijk.

  Ze hadden gewoon moeten pitten tijdens de 2e VSC.
  Geen idee wat ze aan de pitmuur aan het doen waren maar ik vermoed dat er in het geheel niemand meer zat daar. Wat een geblunder.

  Ik vind het wel echt rot voor Alonso. Hij rijdt dit jaar veel beter dan Ocon, maar door omstandigheden heeft hij minder punten.

  Wat @stri zegt. De VSC werd al volledig opgeheven toen Alonso net de laatste chicane uitkwam. Alonso kreeg ook de opdracht om de pits in te gaan tenzij de VSC opgeheven zou worden. Normaal win je zo'n 8 tot 9 seconden met een pitstop onder een volledig VSC. Misschien dat Alonso nog net een seconde had kunnen winnen door op dat moment binnen te rijden, maar het was waarschijnlijk het beste om toen door te rijden. Hij heeft eigenlijk heel veel pech gehad. Het zou misschien eerlijker zijn als ze een VSC minimaal een volledige ronde aanhouden.

  Het zal wel ook wat te maken hebben met de regenafstelling want Ocon had een significante voordeel in rechtelijn snelheid wat duidt op minder vleugel dan Alonso.

Tactisch was het een drama. Was met stomheid geslagen. De terugval klinkt wel logisch met het verlies aan performance door de motor. Hij reed in de eerste fase weg van Hamilton en vooral Russell.

De beide Mercedessen en ook Leclerc zijn Ocon ook relatief eenvoudig voorbij gegaan en Ocon had geen motorproblemen, dus nee een podium was niet realistisch geweest
