Perez had geluk met safety car: "Gaf ons de kans om te vechten voor het podium"

Sergio Perez reed afgelopen weekend een verbazingwekkende inhaalrace in Silverstone. De Mexicaanse Red Bull Racing-coureur begon de race vanaf de vierde plaats maar viel na een touche bij de herstart ver terug. Toch kwam hij als tweede over de lijn nadat hij optimaal profiteerde van de safety car.

Perez gebruikte zijn ellebogen tijdens een duel met Charles Leclerc in de eerste ronde na de herstart. De Mexicaan raakte de Ferrari van Leclerc en allebei de coureurs liepen schade aan hun voorvleugel op. Perez kwam direct naar binnen en moest zichzelf naar voren vechten. Tijdens de safety car-fase wisselde hij naar de softs en kon hij de aanval openen. Een mooi duel met Leclerc en Lewis Hamilton leverde hem de tweede plaats op.

Pech

Perez reed dus een redelijk opvallende race en na afloop is hij dan ook de eerste om dit toe te geven. Tijdens de persconferentie voor de top drie reflecteerde hij op zijn race: "Ik had pech met Charles in de eerste ronde. Er was geen ruimte voor drie auto's. Jammer genoeg had ik het minste geluk. Ik had schade aan mijn voorvleugel. Normaal gesproken heeft dat niet veel effect maar bij mij was dat wel het geval. Ik moest een pitstop maken en ik moest praktisch van de laatste plaats naar voren komen."

Geluk

Red Bull koos voor een goede strategie en dat stemde Perez tevreden. De safety car-fase kwam hem goed uit en Perez is de eerste die dat toegeeft: "De mediums hielden het goed vol en we hadden geluk met de safety car. Dat gaf ons een goede kans om te vechten voor het podium. In de laatste paar rondjes was het een fijn gevecht met Lewis. Het is lang geleden dat we goed konden vechten dus ik was er klaar voor. Ik vocht ook met Charles, hij was erg agressief maar fair, ik weet zeker dat de fans ervan genoten."

Die laatste rondes was echt om je vingers bij af te likken. Man wat een prachtige gevechten tussen Checo, Charles en Lewis! Heel even leek Lewis er vandoor te piepen met die dubbele inhaalactie, maar Checo was toch een bull maatjes te groot. Hulde voor deze drie gladiatoren en hulde voor de wedstrijdleiding die ze hebben laten racen zonder investigations of andere flauwekul.

  De regels werken dan toch lijkt t. Geweldig hoe ze raceten hoe dicht ze achter elkaar reden tussen maggots & beckets. Fantastische baan. Samen met Zandvoort en Monaco de beste wat mij betreft.

Ik denk dat de Britten wederom de SC als een reden noemen dat de eerste plek van Lewis gestolen is.

  Mooi dat Perez vanaf bijna helemaal achteraan zich toch nog naar
  een 2e plaats heeft weten te vechten.

Mwoahhh was gewoon een goede tactiek. Russell begon ook op Hard. Die safety car zou voor hem ook weer perfect zijn gevallen. Dus wie weet hoe de race dan verlopen zou zijn. Okee het was wel wat gelukkig maar zovaak doen ze dit bij Checo. Dus om het alleen op geluk te gooien vind ik onterecht.
