Brawn genoot van duels: "Coureurs moesten echt hard werken"

De Britse Grand Prix van afgelopen weekend was een enorm spektakelstuk. Bij de eerste start ging het gruwelijk mis en vloog Guanyu Zhou over de bandenstapel heen en bleef hij hangen in de hekken. Het was een schokkend ongeval maar wonder boven wonder bleef hij ongedeerd.

Nadat Zhou uit zijn auto was gehaald, de baan was schoongemaakt en er de nodige reparatiewerkzaamheden werden verricht kon de race weer van start gaan. Het vervolg van de race was nooit saai en er waren zeer veel mooie duels. Vooral na de late safety car-fase kon de liefhebber zijn vingers aflikken. Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton en Sergio Perez vochten een mooi duel uit.

Precisie

Ook Ross Brawn, Managing Director van de sportieve kant van de sport, genoot van de duels. De Brit zat op het puntje van zijn stoel en deelde in zijn column op de site van de sport zijn enthousiasme: "We werden getrakteerd op echt mooi racen. Ik genoot van de precisie van de coureurs. We zagen ontelbare fascinerende duels die bochtenlang doorgingen met veel positiewisselingen. We zagen dat de coureurs met deze nieuwe auto's meerdere lijnen konden rijden. Daardoor konden twee, drie of zelfs vier auto's wiel-aan-wiel duelleren."

Kwaliteit

Vrijwel op alle gedeeltes van de baan vochten de coureurs opvallende gevechten uit. Brawn zag daarnaast dat de coureurs niet alleen in de DRS-zones de aanval openden. De Brit ziet dat als een zeer positief punt: "De kwaliteit van de inhaalacties lag eveneens heel erg hoog. De coureurs moesten echt hard werken op een inhaalactie voor elkaar te krijgen. Het was zeker geen zaak van de DRS openen en erlangs vliegen."

Op sommige circuits moeten we misschien eens proberen te racen zonder DRS.
Dat zal echt niet overal gaan, dan wordt het een optocht maar hier zou het misschien kunnen.

  anderzijds, om op een voorganger in te lopen en het tot een werkelijk duel te laten komen is de DRS nog altijd heel effectief. Van mij mogen ze het zeker proberen, en Silverstone zou er een prima circuit voor zijn. Ik ben alleen bang dat het resultaat wel eens kan tegenvallen.

  nee, juist niet op Silverstone, daar werkte DRS zoals het bedoeld is. Op andere circuits maakt DRS het soms wel veels te makkelijk.

  Ze kunnen aan de lengte van de DRS sleutelen of het aantal zones vooraleer het volledig weg te gooien. Zonder DRS vrees ik - ondanks de aero wijzigingen - de "Trulli treintjes" en daar hebben we ook helemaal niks aan.
  
  Zondag was toch geweldig - op bepaalde momenten zelfs 5 teams met elkaar in gevecht, dat was voorheen ondenkbaar. Ik ben wel voorstander van de nieuwe regelgeving/wielen/banden - als het goed is mag het ook eens gezegd!

  Juist in gevechten met 5 auto's hebben er 4 DRS.
  Nu heb ik op Silverstone weinig van DRS gemerkt dus dan werkt het misschien inderdaad zoals het bedoelt is.
  
  Dat deze gevechten nu plaats vinden is erg gaaf inderdaad! Vooral omdat je er achter kan blijven en meteen je plek terug kan pakken bij de volgende bocht. Het was genieten maar dat vond ik ook in 2019 op Silverstone dus de baan zelf is er ook goed voor.

  DRS moet gewoon in zijn gehaal worden afgeschaft. Haalt alle spanning weg.
