Häkkinen dankt Halo: "Ondanks dat Zhou over de kop vloog bleef hij ongedeerd"

De Halo liet afgelopen weekend in Silverstone maar weer eens zijn nut zien. De cockpitbescherming zorgde ervoor dat Guanyu Zhou niet met zijn hoofd het asfalt raakte tijdens de startcrash. De crash van Zhou was zeer heftig maar de Chinese Alfa Romeo-coureur liep geen verwondingen op.

De Halo werd sinds zijn introductie veelvuldig bekritiseerd. Het beschermmiddel zag er volgens velen niet uit maar langzamerhand is de kritiek verdwenen. Meermaals bewees de Halo zijn nut en in Silverstone werd het leven van Zhou gered. Ook tijdens een Formule 2-crash eerder op de zondag werd een coureur gered door de ring rondom de cockpit.

Anticiperen

Ook tweevoudig wereldkampioen Mika Häkkinen is van mening dat de Halo zeer belangrijk is. De Finse ex-coureur denkt dat Zhou er anders niet meer zou zijn geweest. In zijn column voor Unibet spreekt hij zich uit: "Dit was een ongeval waar de teams en de FIA al op anticipeerden. Alle veiligheidssystemen deden wat ze moeten doen. Ondanks dat Zhou over de kop vloog en in de hekken belandde was hij ongedeerd. Dit gebeurt wanneer er meerdere incidenten tegelijkertijd plaatsvinden."

Rollbar

Toch denkt Häkkinen dat er nog een vervolgonderzoek aan zal komen. De rollbar van de Alfa Romeo van Zhou begaf het immers waardoor de Halo echt een belangrijke rol speelde bij de crash: "Er is geen twijfel dat de FIA goed naar de schade en de data gaat kijken. Het is echter het belangrijkste dat de auto ondersteboven verder schoof en Zhou de gehele tijd werd beschermd door de Halo en de randen van de cockpit."

Los van dit eindeloze gezever over de halo is er wél wat te melden over de rollbar.
Sauber (Alfa Romeo) gebruikt namelijk een enkele "paal" terwijl meestal een driehoek constructie wordt gebruikt voor de stevigheid.
Ook lijkt op de beelden na de crash de rollbar bovenop het chassis gelijmd vanwege het ontbreken van bevestigingsmiddelen zoals bouten of lassen.
Welllicht dat dit tot het falen heeft geleid.
Overigens is deze methode al vaker toegepast, ook door andere F1 teams.
Vooral omdat hierdoor de flow naar de airintake geoptimaliseerd kan worden.

  Precies daarom dacht ik dat de rollbar misschien lager zit tegenwoordig, onder de luchthappert. Want op foto's zie je duidelijk het gat van de luchthappert maar nergens iets van de rollbar. Maar dat blijkt de survival cell te zijn.
