Grosjean over uitgestelde Mercedes-test: "Het is mijn schuld"

De speciale Mercedes-test voor voormalig F1 Romain Grosjean staat nog steeds op de planning, maar door zijn IndyCar-werkzaamheden in Amerika is het er nog niet van gekomen. De Fransman legt de volledige verantwoordelijkheid bij zichzelf dat deze test nog niet heeft plaats gevonden.

"Ik heb Mercedes geen data kunnen geven dat ik terug ben in Europa. Ik verhuisde in december 2021, kreeg het erg druk."

"Het was de bedoeling dat ik met de Mercedes zou rijden tijdens de Franse Grand Prix [in 2021] en daarna een testdag in Le Castellet, Paul Ricard".

De Fransman legde andermaal waarom deze test niet doorging vorig jaar. "Vanwege Covid werd de datum van de Franse Grand Prix verschoven en had ik hetzelfde weekend een race. We wilden de testdag doen, maar er was wat quarantaine tussen Frankrijk en het VK, dus voor Mercedes werd het erg ingewikkeld."

Maar de Andretti Autosport-coureur heeft bevestigd dat Wolff zekerheid heeft gegeven dat de test voor de toekomst zal worden gepland. "We hadden een datum voor september op Silverstone, maar de baan kon niet worden geboekt", legde Grosjean uit. "Ik heb contact gehad met Mercedes, ik zag Toto in Miami voor de F1 en hij zei ja, de test staat nog vast en ik twijfel er niet aan, maar het is mijn schuld. Ik heb geen tijd kunnen vinden om terug te gaan naar Europa en de test te doen."

Cadeautje Mercedes

Romain Grosjeans Formule 1-loopbaan kwam in 2020 met een klap ten einde. Na zijn angstaanjagende vuurbal-crash in Bahrein stapte hij niet meer in een Formule 1-bolide, al wil hij nog wel afscheid nemen van de koningsklasse van de autosport.

Hierdoor leek Grosjeans droom van een waardig Formule 1-afscheid te smelten als sneeuw voor de zon. Maar het topteam van Mercedes streek met de hand over het hart en bood Grosjean een speciale test aan als afscheidscadeau.
