Ricciardo over toekomst: “Wil met McLaren in F1 zijn”

Daniel Ricciardo kent een moeilijke periode tot zover bij het team van McLaren. Nadat hij door teamgenoot Lando Norris vorig jaar in het onderlinge duel werd verslagen in het rijderskampioenschap, was er van menigeen rondom de Formule 1 de hoop dat de nieuwe regelementen wat betreft designfilosofie van de auto van 2022 Ricciardo goed zou doen. Na ook een matige eerste seizoenshelft en de contractverleningen van teamgenoot Lando Norris en IndyCar duo Patricio O’Ward en Felix Rosenqvist, lijkt de druk op de schouders van Ricciardo flink te groeien.

Terwijl McLaren druk bezig is met de verkenning van haar coureurs in zowel de F1 als IndyCar, kent Ricciardo opnieuw een moeizaam seizoen. Met drie puntenfinishes in de afgelopen elf races, lijkt de Australiër de top van het team niet te kunnen overtuigen om de coureur nog langer bij het team te houden.

Al snel na de signering van de huidige IndyCar kampioen Alex Palou, vond Ricciardo het noodzakelijk om via zijn social media zijn intenties duidelijk te maken: “Er zijn momenteel flink wat rumoeren rondom mijn toekomst in F1, maar ik wil dat je het van mij hoort. Ik ben toegewijd aan McLaren tot het einde van volgend jaar en ik loop niet weg uit de sport”, luidt zijn statement.

Nu de gemoederen en stemmen wat afgezwakt zijn, is Ricciardo in gesprek met RaceFans gegaan om uit te leggen waarom hij het hoog tijd vond om een einde te maken aan de groeiende geluiden rondom zijn contract. “Een statement naar buiten brengen was eigenlijk een soort van ‘ik bepaal mijn eigen toekomst’ geluid. Tuurlijk vragen mensen zich af, ‘wat gaat hij doen, wat gaat er gebeuren, blijft hij hier nog wel, wil hij hier nog wel zijn’, en zulke soort uitspraken. Nee. Ik wil hier heel graag zijn. Niet alleen in de sport, maar bij McLaren.”

Terwijl de MCL36 van McLaren een auto is waar Ricciardo moeite mee heeft, blijft hij volhoudend zeggen dat de het zijn probleem en uitdaging is om de bolide onder controle te krijgen. “Het is een uitdaging die ik niet uit de weg ga, zo simpel is het.” De coureur laat tot slot weten dat juist de uitdaging en moeizaamheden factoren zijn die ervoor zorgen dat hij nog steeds houdt van de sport: “Ik hou er nog steeds van. Op de dagen dat ik de sport als het ware haat, hou ik er nog steeds even veel van. De moeilijkheden motiveren mij om de weg naar de top te vinden. Ik denk dat ik er simpelweg nog steeds even veel van hou.”

Ik zou hem eruit gooien, dat gaat niet beter worden, andere kant misschien gaat dat McLaren zoveel geld kosten dat ze hem toch nog maar 1 jaar houden.

Normaal zou hij plaats moeten maken, is niet goed genoeg.

Ik zie 'm niet graag vertrekken uit de F1 maar hij laat het ook niet zien al bijna 2 seizoenen. Bij Renault het laatste jaar was ie prima. Maar zn RedBull niveau zie ik 'm niet meer aantikken.

Wat Daniel wil is denk ik niet zo belangrijk.. Wel hoe hij presteert en wat hij kost aan salaris etc.. Ik vermoed dat McLaren daar niet echt heel tevreden over zal zijn.. Voor de toekomst hebben ze hem ook niet echt nodig want met Norris al een jonger groot talent in huis.. Ik vrees voor Daniel dat hij met een minder contract genoeg zal moeten gaan nemen of dat het exit F1 wordt.. Misschien dat McLaren hem voor volgend jaar nog aanhoudt omdat het huidige contract afkopen te duur is, maar daarna is het toch echt afgelopen denk ik.. Tenzij hij zich in de tussentijd nog flink verbetert qua prestaties, maar zou niet weten waar dat dan vandaan zou moeten komen.. Sinds hij bij Red Bull weg is gegaan is ook zijn 'mojo' weg.. De nieuwe jongere generatie heeft hem ingehaald (Verstappen, Norris etc)..

  Verstappen wel maar lando nog niet die verkloot gewoon een overwinning door niet te willen luisteren of te overleggen en daar was Ricciardo veel beter in

Het zal allemaal wel RIC, maar na je vertrek bij RB is het alleen maar bergafwaarts gegaan. Tijd om te stoppen en om down under kangaroos te gaan fokken.
