Magnussen ‘beetje zenuwachtig’ over werking upgrades VF-22

Met de nieuwe regelementen op het gebied van aerodynamica in Formule 1 dit seizoen, hebben vrijwel alle teams geprobeerd om hun auto’s zoveel mogelijk door te ontwikkelen. Het team van Haas ging in die zin tegen de strategie van haar concurrenten in en kieste ervoor om het originele aerodynamische pakket te behouden. Tot nu, dit aankomend weekend, waar de Grand Prix van Hongarije op het schema staat. Het zal Haas-coureur Kevin Magnussen benieuwen in hoeverre het nieuwe pakket zal werken.

Kevin Magnussen kon onverwacht dit seizoen terug komen bij Haas en scoorde tijdens de allereerste race van het seizoen bij de Grand Prix van Bahrein meteen punten met een vijfde finishplaats. Magnussen is verbaasd hoe goed de auto presteert zonder enige noemenswaardige updates. “We zien dat we dit jaar meer performance vinden dat dat we hadden gedacht. Het is verassend hoeveel we uit het pakket hebben kunnen halen”, zegt Magnussen in gesprek met Autosport.

Omdat Magnussen een betere positie heeft in het rijderskampioenschap dan zijn teamgenoot Mick Schumacher, zal Magnussen het nieuwe aero-pakket, die volgens Haas-baas Guenther Steiner een mooie verbetering kan zijn, dit weekend op zijn auto krijgen. Ondanks dat Steiner waakt om voorbarige voorspellingen te geven over de upgrade van het aero-pakket, is het uiteraard de bedoeling dat het een positief effect zou moeten geven op de performance van de Haas-bolide. Magnussen is nerveus of de werking van het nieuwe pakket zal werken. “Onze auto is tot nu toe bijzonder competitief zonder enige grote upgrades. Wanneer je dus een nieuwe update doorvoert, is het dus de vraag of het ons vooruit of achteraf zal brengen. Ik ben een beetje zenuwachtig, maar het zal interessant worden om te zien hoe het gaat werken.”

Gewoon niet stuk rijden. Net als in 2020 een strakke race rijden, zoveel mogelijk data verzamelen en in Spa aankomen met een wondersetup om daar een shocking podium te pakken. Ik gun t Haas. Het is letterlijk het enige team dat nog niet weet hoe een podium voelt. Sauber/Alfa Romeo wacht er inmiddels ook wel weer een tijd op.

Blijft toch wel Haas, ze hebben voor hun doen al veel punten gepakt, ik verwacht de rest van het seizoen dat het alleen maar minder zal gaan met punten te pakken.

Met één grote update dit jaar ga ik ervan uit dat deze update uitgebreid met CFD is doorgerekend, in de windtunnel is geverifieerd en in de simulator verder getest is. Wat de meeste teams hebben proberen te verbteren, even los van porpoising, is drag. En daartoe hebben de meeste teams al een nieuwe achtervleugel gemonteerd die dat moet bewerkstelligen. Ik verwacht niet anders bij de Haas upgrade.
