Voormalig Ferrari-kopstuk duidelijk: "Binotto moet dit tot op de bodem uitzoeken"

Het team van Ferrari vecht dit seizoen weer mee om de prijzen. De Italiaanse renstal vormt samen met Red Bull Racing de kop van het veld maar de verschillen zijn groot. Ferrari staat immers op een zeer forse achterstand in het wereldkampioenschap. Dit komt niet door een snelheidsverschil maar door tactische blunders en betrouwbaarheidsproblemen.

Bij Ferrari doet men zijn best om het hoofd koel te houden. Ondertussen begint de druk vanuit de buitenwereld op Ferrari toe te nemen. De kritiek is niet mals en veel fans beginnen aardig onrustig te worden. Coureurs Charles Leclerc en Carlos Sainz moeten in de tweede seizoenshelft gaan toeslaan om het gat met Red Bull nog enigszins te dichten.

Fouten

Er gaan dan ook geluiden op om een bezem te halen door de top van het team van Ferrari. Teambaas Mattia Binotto moet daar echter niet aandenken. Voormalig sportief directeur van Ferrari Cesare Fiorio hoopt dat men de zaak snel gaat onderzoeken. Tegenover La Gazzetta dello Sport spreekt Fiorio zich uit: "Je moet toegeven dat Mattia een team van Ferrari heeft gemaakt dat elke race kan winnen. Binotto was een fantastische engineer. Hij was eerst een motorspecialist, toen technisch directeur en vandaag de dag is zijn werk weer compleet verschillend. Er is overduidelijk iets niet in de haak, er worden fouten gemaakt. Binotto moet het tot op de bodem uitzoeken, dat is nu zijn grootste uitdaging."

Coureurs

Volgens de voormalig sportief directeur hoeven de coureurs zich in ieder geval geen zorgen te maken. Fiorio neemt Leclerc en Sainz niets kwalijk: "Je kan de coureurs niet als schuldige aanwijzen. Ferrari heeft twee fantastische coureurs. Voor mij behoren ze allebei bij de top vijf van de Formule 1. Leclerc is enorm snel in de kwalificaties en Sainz is een goede racer. Allebei zijn ze goed genoeg om de constructeurstitel te pakken met Ferrari. Ik zou nooit een wijziging in de line-up overwegen."
