Steiner kijkt terug op Mazepin-kwestie: "Geen eenvoudige maar wel duidelijke beslissing"

Het team van Haas is bezig met een redelijk succesvol seizoen in de Formule 1. De Amerikaanse renstal was vorig seizoen het lelijke eendje van de sport maar kan dit jaar meevechten in het middenveld. De successen van Haas zijn opvallend, eerder dit jaar kreeg men immers een stevige crisis voor de kiezen.

Tijdens de wintertests op het circuit van Barcelona viel Rusland buurland Oekraïne binnen. De oorlog had ook gevolgen voor het team van Haas. Bij het team stond op dat moment immers nog Nikita Mazepin onder contract. De Russische coureur bracht veel geld mee maar hij en zijn vader hebben eveneens goede banden met het regime van president Poetin. Haas besloot dan ook om Mazepin de deur te wijzen.

Mazepin werd uiteindelijk vervangen door Kevin Magnussen en de storm bij Haas ging liggen. Teambaas Günther Steiner kijkt halverwege het seizoen terug op de situatie. Tegenover RACER begint Steiner grappend: "Dat is nooit gebeurd! Welke februari was dat? Maar ja dat was een probleem waar ik geen zit in had. We wisten dat er iets moest gebeuren. Het moest worden uitgevoerd op een meneer waarmee we de minste schade zouden aanrichten. Veel mensen waren niet blij geweest als we het op een andere manier hadden gedaan. Het was geen eenvoudige maar wel een duidelijke beslissing. Er waren ook mensen bij betrokken die niets verkeerd hadden gedaan."

Zeker de juiste beslissing. Ze hebben de Rich saga overleefd door Russische noodzaak, maar hebben het direct geloosd toen dit niet meer nodig was en de kans zich aangreep.

Dit is wat een F1 team moet doen. Niet zoals Kaltenborn jaren lang zoeken naar paydrivers.

  PWNieuw@ tuurlijk niet. Ik bedoel er mee dat ze een slechte paydriver direct hebben laten gaan toen de kans zich aanbood. Niet om zijn afkomst maar kwaliteit.
  
  Zhou is dan wel een paydriver... maar zo slecht vind ik hem tot op heden niet.
  
  Waarom moeten we Zhou of Mazepin in de put duwen vanwege hun afkomst? Om hun resultaten is een meer redelijke reden daarvoor.
