Bottas geniet weer: "Ik heb nu helemaal geen stress"

Valtteri Bottas is sinds dit seizoen actief voor het team van Alfa Romeo. De Fin reed in de voorgaande jaren voor het topteam van Mercedes waar hij telkens slechts een éénjarig contract had en in dienst reed van Lewis Hamilton. Nu is alles anders en laat Bottas zich regelmatig in positieve zin zien.

De Fin leek een tegenvallend seizoen voor de boeg te hebben, Alfa Romeo draaide vorig jaar immers niet zo sterk seizoen. Bottas komt echter vrij sterk voor de dag en heeft al 46 punten bij elkaar gereden, goed voor de negende plaats in het wereldkampioenschap. Bottas komt veel beter voor de dag dan zijn teamgenoot Guanyu Zhou, de Chinees staat zeventiende met slechts 5 punten.

Geen stress

Bottas geniet van zijn eerste seizoen in dienst van Alfa Romeo en van zijn meerderjarige contract. De Finse coureur heeft nu veel meer rust en deelt zijn opluchting in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Dit is voor mij de allereerste keer. Zelfs toen ik nog voor het team van Williams reed was het altijd maar een contract van een jaar. Ik heb nu helemaal geen stress en ik hoef geen vragen te beantwoorden. Het is niet prettig voor de coureurs die dat wel moeten."

Leuk

Bottas heeft de lol in zijn werk overduidelijk teruggevonden en dat doet hem goed. De Finse coureur vecht niet langer om de zeges maar dat maakt hem niets uit: "Dit seizoen is waarschijnlijk het leukste tot nu toe. Je onthoudt misschien niet alles maar ik heb het idee dat ik nu meer van de sport geniet. Het racen is erg leuk, met name in het middenveld en de strategische keuzes die daarbij komen kijken. Het voelt alsof je met een beslissing meer posities kan pakken. Het is gewoon anders. In het verleden vocht ik met Mercedes vaak tegen één team. Nu heb ik zes auto's waar ik rekening mee moet houden. Het is veel leuker."

Mercedes lijkt mij ook geen leuk team om voor te rijden. misschien alleen als je wint. maar win je niet dan vliegen de koptelefoons en de tafeltjes door de fabriek. geef mij dan maar RB Of Ferrari. de 1 slaat soms wel door in het ´leuk´ zijn, maar alles beter dan dat dode duitse team. Mclaren en Williams lijken mij ook leuke teams. en natuurlijk de outsider HAAS, vooral met die teambaas, want dat is wel een baas.

  Lijkt me ook niet leuk om overal de schuld van te krijgen. Zoals de pitstop die verkeerd liep in Monaco of dat Verstappen in Mexico bij de start beide Mercedes coureurs voorbij ging. En dan wordt je ook nog heel vroeg in het seizoen door je teambaas publiekelijk weggezet als "wingman".
  
  De enkele keren dat Bottas wel een goed weekend had en sneller was dan zijn teamgenoot kreeg hij op de radio weer een bericht dat begon met "Valtteri it is James".
  
  Het is sowieso al niet leuk als je als uiterst middelmatig coureur naast een coureur van het kaliber Hamilton moet rijden, maar als je dan ook nog geen enkele kans krijgt en alle degelijke optredens je worden ontnomen valt er inderdaad weinig lol te beleven.

Dat zag je wel eind 2021, Bottas was helemaal klaar met Mercedes

Ik begrijp wel dat hij nu de tijd van zijn leven heeft in de F1.

Volgens Bottas voelt het team van Alfa Romeo aan als een nieuwe renstal. Daarnaast vindt hij het relaxter dan bij Mercedes. Bij het Duitse merk was de druk hoger omdat hij voor zeges en titels vocht.

"Als ik werk, geef ik alles. In mijn vrije tijd kan ik vervolgens doen wat ik wil. De balans tussen het leven binnen en buiten het team is prima in orde." Bottas is actief op verschillende social media-kanalen.
Onlangs plaatste hij een foto op Instagram waarop hij aan skinnydippen was in een rivier ergens in de Verenigde Staten.
De foto, die als naam 'Bot-ass' kreeg, werd uitgeprint en leverde uiteindelijk 50.000 euro op voor een goed doel.

Op de vraag of de Fin dergelijke foto's van Mercedes zou mogen plaatsen, antwoordt hij. "Ik betwijfel of ik dat überhaupt had gedaan.
Buiten het circuit voel ik me nu rustiger en maak me ook minder druk om wat mensen denken. Het was een goede foto."
