Binotto verklaart motorproblemen: "Niet het idee dat we teveel hebben gepusht"

Het team van Ferrari kende een wisselvallige eerste seizoenshelft. De Italiaanse renstal kan dit jaar weer meevechten om de prijzen maar kampt eveneens met grote betrouwbaarheidsproblemen. Coureurs Charles Leclerc en Carlos Sainz vielen meermaals uit met onderliggende problemen, meestal ging er iets kapot aan de Power Unit.

De grote hoeveelheid betrouwbaarheidsproblemen hebben ervoor gezorgd dat de achterstand van Leclerc op Max Verstappen in het wereldkampioenschap zeer fors is. Bij Ferrari weet men in ieder geval dat er met de snelheid van de wagens niet zo veel mis is, het team kan de degens vrij simpel kruisen met concurrent Red Bull Racing.

Prioriteit

Maar de betrouwbaarheid blijft dus ver achter bij de performance. Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto is zich daar zeer bewust van. Tegenover de Italiaanse tak van Motorsport.com geeft Binotto dit zelfs toe: "Ik heb niet het idee dat we te veel hebben gepusht, dat kun je namelijk nooit genoeg doen. Natuurlijk hebben we de prioriteit gegeven aan de performance boven de betrouwbaarheid."

Testbank

Het is een opvallende keuze maar volgens Binotto heeft het een simpele oorzaak. De teambaas wijst namelijk naar het huidige regelboek. In de reglementen staat namelijk dat de teams maar een beperkt aantal uren gebruik mogen maken van de testbank. Op deze testbank laat men de motor proefdraaien. Het dwong Ferrari tot het maken van keuzes. Binotto is duidelijk: "Daarom hebben we voor het maximum bij het prestatieniveau gekozen. Betrouwbaarheidsproblemen kunnen altijd worden opgelost. Dat betekent echter niet dat we bij de eerste races aankwamen met het idee dat de motoronbetrouwbaar was. Tijdens de winter hebben we namelijk geen grote problemen gehad maar wisten we wel dat de situatie niet ideaal was. We kregen te maken met problemen waarmee we niet te maken kregen op de testbank. Dat hoort bij een nieuw project dus er zijn geen verrassingen."

Die betrouwbaarheid is ook niet zo erg. Juist dikke prima dat ze nu veel vermogen hebben en weer vooraan mee kunnen doen. Maar als de betrouwbaarheid ze niet in de steek laat dan verklooien ze het zelf wel met de strategie. Ik denk dat een heleboel Ferrari fans dat veel erger vinden.

  Het beste kunnen de strategen (etc.) dan ook zelf onbeperkt op de testbank gaan liggen, ook of juist tijdens de GP's...
