Marko verwacht geen comeback van Vettel: "Denk dat het definitief is"

Viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel kondigde enkele weken geleden aan dat hij na dit seizoen met pensioen gaat. De Duitser verlengt zijn contract bij Aston Martin dus niet en is inmiddels begonnen aan zijn afscheidstournee. Een comeback in de toekomst wordt door kenners en bekenden van Vettel uitgesloten.

Vettel is in de afgelopen jaren uitgegroeid tot één van de meest gerespecteerde coureurs van het Formule 1-startveld. De Duitser sprak zich steeds vaker uit over maatschappelijke onderwerpen en toonde zich een voorvechter van milieumaatregelen. Vettel behaalde al zijn wereldtitels in dienst van Red Bull Racing en ook daar is men hem nog lang niet vergeten.

Brief

Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko is nog steeds zeer trots op Vettel. De Oostenrijker zag het pensioen van Vettel aankomen en spreekt zich lovend uit in gesprek met het Duitse Motorsport-Total: "Vettel schrijft de laatste tijd brieven met de hand. Ik ben de trotse eigenaar van zo'n brief. Hij zit momenteel niet in een competitieve auto en ik denk dat hij ook geen perspectief ziet om volgend jaar op het podium te eindigen. Bij de topteams is ook geen ruimte."

Definitief

Marko ziet eveneens dat de huidige Formule 1 lastig past bij Vettels idealen. De Oostenrijkse Red Bull-adviseur kan zich dan ook vinden in Vettels aanstaande pensioen: "Hij wil graag zijn kinderen zien opgroeien. Ik vind zijn statement op Instagram zeer goed. Hij heeft andere prioriteiten en een ander wereldbeeld. Het is dan niet goed om voor een team te rijden dat wordt gesponsord door een Arabisch oliebedrijf. Aston Martin is een luxueus merk dat veel cilinders. Dat is niet geloofwaardig en dan is stoppen logisch. Ik weet zeker dat hij zich nu meer gaat bezighouden met de milieuproblemen. Ik denk dat dit afscheid definitief is."

Misschien als een soort mentor-rijder die voor bepaalde begeleiding zorgt maar verder kan ik me alleen maar een reden bedenken: cash is king. Als een gek hem heel veel geld biedt, who knows.

Offtopic;
De Grote Prijs van België in de Formule 1 eind augustus is uitverkocht. Het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps verwacht 360.000 bezoekers in het raceweekeinde (26-28 augustus), 120.000 per dag.

Het is een opsteker voor de organisatoren, want de toekomst van de race in de Ardennen is onzeker. Het contract met de Formule 1 loopt dit jaar af en er is nog geen nieuw akkoord.
