Jos Verstappen kijkt uit naar WRC-debuut: "Een succes als ik de finish haal"

Jos Verstappen maakt dit weekend zijn debuut tijdens een rally die meetelt voor het wereldkampioenschap. Dit weekend staat de WRC-rally van Ypres op het programma en Verstappen staat op de startlijst in zijn Citroën. De voormalig Formule 1-coureur komt dit seizoen uit in het Belgisch rallykampioenschap en kijkt uit naar Ypres.

Verstappen keerde dit jaar terug in de actieve racerij. De oud-coureur van onder andere Minardi en Arrows maakte zijn comeback niet op het circuit maar op de smalle wegen van België. Zijn avonturen in het Belgische rallykampioenschap verlopen wisselend maar Verstappen heeft het wel naar zijn zin. Dit weekend mag hij zich dus laten zien tussen de grote kanonnen.

Finishen

De vader van regerend Formule 1-wereldkampioen Max Verstappen kijkt uit naar zijn WRC-debuut. Verstappen senior kijkt vooruit op Verstappen.com: "Voor mij is het een succes als ik de finish haal. Ik kan onze snelheid niet inschatten maar dat vind ik ook niet zo belangrijk. Ik zal hier weer veel gaan leren en we zullen wel zien waar we finishen en wat onze doelen dan zijn. Ik heb er heel veel zin in, samen met mijn navigator Harm van Koppen. Het is voor mij een hobby maar aan de andere kant wil ik zo hard mogelijk gaan. Het is soms moeilijk om daar de juiste balans in te vinden."

Meer rally's

Als het aan Verstappen ligt is de Ypres Rally niet zijn laatste avontuur in het WRC. Jos Verstappen is er zeer stellig over als het hem wordt gevraagd: "Ik moet wel zeggen dat het nogal intensief is. Je werkt er de hele week naartoe en eigenlijk zelfs al eerder, als je bijvoorbeeld vooraf notes wil maken. De voorbereiding vergt veel tijd en ik weet niet of ik daar genoeg tijd voor heb. Ik wil zeker aan meer WRC rally's gaan meedoen."

Het grootste succes van Jos is natuurlijk de opleiding die hij zijn zoon gegeven heeft, maar ook groot respect voor deze heer als het aankomt op het talent om een auto zo snel mogelijk over een circuit te jagen of over een afgezet parkour, maar ook op de gewoone weg, heb het voorrecht gehad om enkele keren te mogen meerijden, over de openbare weg welliswaar, en in een gewoone auto op kenteken, maar halleluja wat een auto beheersing heeft hij, waar ik dacht remmmmmmen, gaf hij gewoon gas bij en nam vervolgens de bocht ook nog perfect, jammer dat hij in de F1 niet het beste materiaal had ......
