Derde tijd maar tweede startplek voor Perez: "Niet de slechtste plek om te starten"

Sergio Perez leek de topfavoriet voor de eerste startplaats in België. De Mexicaan weet dat zijn teamgenoot Max Verstappen en Ferarri-coureur Charles Leclerc morgen ver naar achteren starten door gridstraffen. Toch lukt het Perez niet om de pole te claimen, hij werd derde en start morgen als tweede.

Perez moest veel tijd toegeven op zijn teamgenoot Verstappen. In het alles beslissende derde kwalificatiedeel moest Perez ook de Ferrari van Carlos Sainz voor zich dulden. Dat betekent dus ook dat Perez morgenmiddag samen met Sainz op de eerste startrij staat. Er liggen dus nog genoeg kansen op een zege en in ieder geval een podium.

Na afloop van de kwalificatie was de Mexicaanse Red Bull Racing-coureur dan ook mild tevreden. Perez verscheen voor de microfoon van interviewster van dienst Naomi Schiff: "P2 is niet de slechtste plek om te starten op dit circuit. Als ik een goede run kan neerzetten ten opzichte van Carlos, dan bevind ik mij aan de andere kant. Ik kijk dus uit naar morgen want er ligt een mooie race in het verschiet."
