Wolff ziet geen heil in krachtige social media-posts

Het team van Mercedes is momenteel bezig met een zeer teleurstellend seizoen. De achterstand op concurrenten Red Bull Racing en Ferrari is fors en de resultaten vallen tegen. Mercedes heeft nog geen enkele race gewonnen en de berichten doorspekt met zelfvertrouwen blijven dan ook uit. Teambaas Toto Wolff ziet er het nut niet van in.

Mercedes worstelt dit seizoen veelvuldig met zichzelf. Het team had zeer veel last van porpoising en had daardoor een flinke achterstand op Red Bull en Ferrari. George Russell zorgde in Hongarije voor een lichtpuntje door de pole position te pakken en eventjes leek het erop dat de problemen ten einde waren. Afgelopen weekend in België was het gat echter weer groot.

Onjuiste correlatie

In voorgaande jaren reageerde het team na een tegenslag altijd met een hoopgevende post op social media. Momenteel is dat niet het geval en Wolff deelt zijn teleurstellingen met Motorsport.com: "Momenteel hebben we het niet goed voor elkaar. De onjuiste correlatie op meerdere gebieden zorgt ervoor dat we niet presteren. Misschien wordt alles overschaduwd door één ding en dan doen we aantal gebieden geen recht. Misschien begrijpen we de banden niet of verpest de aerodynamica alles? Het is lastig te ontleden. Ze zeggen altijd dat je nooit verliest maar altijd leert. Ik kan je zeggen dat het moeilijk is."

Instagram

Voorlopig hoeven de fans dan ook geen hoopgevende posts op Twitter of Instagram te verwachten. Wolff heeft het dus lastig en het social media-team kan daar geen verandering in brengen: "Dan heb je niet zoveel aan de Instagram-berichten van de afgelopen acht jaar waarin stat hoe dit ons vormt. Als je het moeilijk hebt moet je vasthouden aan je principes en waarden. De spirit moet blijven. Je moet meedogenloos zijn. Er is over dit seizoen een dikker boek te schrijven dan over de afgelopen acht seizoenen."

Ben niet so van social media maar met platformen zoals Insta, Tiktok enz. lijkt veel geld verdiend te kunnen worden, zeker als je veel followers hebt. Ken persoonlijk iemand die binnen een paar jaar vanuit niets is begonnen met wat filmpjes op Insta en inmiddels een huis voor zichzelf en ook voor ouder (in cash) gekocht. En dit is nog een kleintje. Grote jongens als Mercedes hebben bij voorbaat al duizenden fans.

Nee, er valt weinig te posten. Voorheen was het downplayen en dan werkte het fantastische team keihard en dan na een episch gevecht weer bovenaan. Still rise! Ja, dat waren nog eens smeuïge verhalen. Tegenwoordig starten in de middenmoot en daar blijven. Ja, dan heb je geen verhaal.
