Horner prijst onderscheiding Verstappen: "Geweldige ambassadeur voor het land"

Max Verstappen werd gisteren voorafgaand de persdag in Zandvoort in het zonnetje gezet door minister Conny Helder. De Red Bull Racing-coureur werd in Amsterdam namelijk benoemd tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. Bij de ceremonie was ook Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner aanwezig en hij was onder de indruk van zijn coureur.

Verstappen arriveerde gisteren in Nederland en moest zich eerst melden in Amsterdam. De regerend wereldkampioen wist niet waarom hij daar moest zijn aangezien zijn benoeming tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau een verrassing was. Verstappen was vereerd door zijn onderscheiding en gaf na afloop een speech aan de genodigden.

Ambassadeur

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner was onder de indruk van de speech van zijn Nederlandse coureur. De Brit was aanwezig bij het moment en loofde Verstappen in gesprek met de Nederlandse krant de Telegraaf: "Max deed dat heel erg goed. Hij uitte zijn dankbaarheid. Voor Max is dit een prachtige eer. Je kon zien dat hij geraakt was en dat hij zich vereerd voelde. Hij is een geweldige ambassadeur voor het land. Dat hij dit al op deze leeftijd heeft bereikt is buitengewoon."

Privilege

Horner was samen met Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko aanwezig bij de ceremonie. De Brit vond het een enorm eer en dat stak hij in Zandvoort niet onder stoelen of banken: "Het voelt als een privilege dat wij werden uitgenodigd naast zijn familie. We zijn bij Red Bull allemaal heel erg trots op hem. Sterker nog, heel Nederland mag trots op hem zijn. Het is prachtig dat hij deze erkenning krijgt. Hopelijk gaan we samen nog veel meer bereiken."

Het zou me niks verbazen als dit ‘huwelijk’ tussen Red Bull en Max ‘for life’ is. Na een carrière bij Red Bull in de cockpit, daarna een vervolg als adviseur, teambaas, manager, scout, whatever bij Red Bull buiten de cockpit
