Leclerc verwacht slipstreamstrijd in Italiaanse kwalificatie

Het circuit van Monza staat bekend om de hoge snelheden die er worden bereikt. In de kwalificatie was het in het verleden dan ook van belang om een goede tow te krijgen. Het leverde in het verleden enkele koddige scenes op en het is de verwachting dat het morgen wederom een slipstream-strijd gaat worden.

In de tweede vrije training was het team van Haas al opzichtig bezig met het oefenen van een slipstreamtactiek. Het is de verwachting dat men morgen in de kwalificatie weer veelvuldig gaat loeren op de perfecte tow. Alhoewel er dit seizoen nieuwe aerodynamische regels gelden kan het zomaar zo zijn dat de coureurs weer gaan duelleren voor de perfecte tow.

Waard

Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc verwacht zo'n duel in de kwalificatie. De Monegask doet er niet moeilijk over en merkt op dat er nog steeds profijt valt te behalen van het slipstreamen. In gesprek met Motorsport.com is Leclerc er dan ook duidelijk over: "Het zal waarschijnlijk hetzelfde zijn. Ondanks dat het nu wat minder effect heeft is het, het namelijk nog steeds waard om te doen."

DRS-trein

Leclerc verwacht dat het slipstreamduel het gehele weekend zal gaan duren. De Monegask denkt dat het ook voor de nodige ongemakken in de race kan zorgen: "Coureurs zullen altijd voor het laatste gaan in de kwalificatie. Dus dan is het altijd lastiger dan in de race. Deze wagens kunnen elkaar wat meer volgen in de mediumspeed en highspeed bochten. De tow is echter iets minder waard op de rechte stukken. In de race gaat het afhangen van of er een DRS-trein gaat ontstaan. Het is dan lastig om in te halen, anders is het best makkelijk."

  Mercedes was in Q3 de eerste die met beide auto's uit de pitbox reden en aan het einde van de pitstraat parkeerden om een zogenaamde proefstart te maken. Dat was dus van tevoren zo intern besproken, dat kan niet anders. Wie maakt er nu een proefstart tijdens de kwalificatie?
  Wolff schreeuwde daarna moord en brand over het kwalificatie-debacle en dat het een schande was voor de Formule 1. Ook toen al zat er een draadje los bij de heer Wolff.

  Persoonlijk denk ik dat Hamilton voor zijn eigen kansen gaat. En dat is terecht. Hij wil zo ver als mogelijk naar voren willen starten. Sainz zou dat ook moeten doen.

  Hamilton heeft al aangegeven dat te zullen doen als Russell dat wil. En bij Ferrari gaan ze het gewoon doen. Of Max het ook gaat doen om Checo te helpen weet ik niet.
