Piastri blij met telefoontje McLaren-voorganger Ricciardo

Oscar Piastri kende een roerige zomerstop. Het Australische talent ontkende een contract bij Alpine en stapte na tussenkomst van de CRB over naar McLaren. Piastri komt vanaf aankomend seizoen uit voor de Britse renstal en daar vervangt hij zijn landgenoot Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo belde Piastri op over de zaak.

De uitspraak van de CRB kwam naar buiten tijdens het Nederlandse Grand Prix-weekend. Piastri werd daarna direct officieel gepresenteerd door McLaren. Het was al eerder heel duidelijk geworden dat de Britse renstal de komst van Piastri verwachtte. McLaren maakte immers een week eerder bekend dat Daniel Ricciardo het team na dit seizoen zal gaan verlaten.

Timing

Ricciardo heeft voor komend seizoen nog geen nieuwe werkgever gevonden. De populaire Australiër toont zich echter uiterst positief en belde Piastri op. Piastri reageerde daar op in de podcast In The Fast Lane: "Het was echt geweldig dat Daniel contact zocht. Ik was van plan om zelf contact met hem te zoeken. Het was echter tijdens een race dus de timing was niet echt ideaal. Ik wist eerlijk gezegd ook niet of hij wel iets van mij wilde horen."

Respect

Piastri en Ricciardo lijken dus ook op goede voet met elkaar te leven. Piastri is vanaf aankomend seizoen de Australiër in dienst van McLaren. Hij is nog steeds heel erg blij met het telefoontje van zijn voorganger: "Ik was aan het nadenken over wat ik moest zeggen. Hij was mij dus voor. Daniel is echt een professional. Ik had al extreem veel respect voor hem. Door zijn reactie is dat alleen maar meer geworden."
