'Mercedes in gesprek met Ricciardo over reserverol voor 2023'

Terwijl geruchten over de plannen van Daniel Ricciardo voor 2023 de ronde blijven doen, zegt de Australiër dat er geen probleem is voor volgend seizoen, hij is gewoon niet klaar om op dit moment een contract te ondertekenen.

Twee maanden geleden stond Ricciardo voor vragen over zijn toekomst bij McLaren en of hij bij het team zou blijven in 2023, het derde en laatste jaar van zijn contract. Nadat hij dat uiteindelijk met 'nee' heeft beantwoord, gaat alle geruchten nu over wat hij hierna gaat doen. Hij is in verband gebracht met Alpine en Haas, zelfs Williams is genoemd, hoewel de speculaties op dit moment zijn gericht op Mercedes.

Ricciardo ontmoet Wolff

Niet voor een racestoel, want het Duitse team heeft voor 2023 Lewis Hamilton en George Russell al bevestigd, maar een rol als reservecoureur. Volgens de Franse omroep Canal+ zijn Ricciardo en Mercedes in 'vergevorderde gesprekken' over een contract voor volgend seizoen. Ricciardo zou in Singapore een ontmoeting hebben gehad met Toto Wolff in het motorhome van Mercedes.

Maar of dat nu een contractonderhandeling was of gewoon om even hallo te zeggen, de achtvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar wil er niets over zeggen.

"Wilt u het oplossen? Ik zou niet zeggen dat er een probleem is. Ik neem gewoon de tijd om erachter te komen wat het beste voor mij is. Er is geen haast en ik voel geen druk om snel iets te ondertekenen. Ik wil juist de tijd nemen die ik nodig acht. Ik zal niet zomaar het eerste contract tekenen om weer op de grid te staan. Ik ga door met het seizoen en het zal duidelijk worden wat het beste voor mij is."

Maar serieus.... Ik zie Ricciardo echt niet in dat grijze muis pak acher Wolff in de nek hijgend. Ik moet daar niet aan denken. Dan is de teloorgang compleet.

  Ik snap Mercedes wel. Ze hebben een snelle coureur achter de hand nodig voor als Russel of Hamilton uitvallen door ziekte. Misschien komt Covid wel terug!? En nu het erop lijkt dat Nyck onderweg is naar de Red Bull familie, ze niemand meer bij Williams (of Aston Martin) vandaan kunnen halen, hebben ze een coureur nodig die als het nodig is snel in kan stappen en ook direct competitief kan zijn. Daniel past goed in dat plaatje. Voor Daniel kan het ook een goede optie zijn. Nog verder achteraan hobbelen bij Williams of Haas zal zijn carrière helemaal de das om doen. Als reserve bij Mercedes blijft hij in ieder geval betrokken bij een top F1 team en kan hij wellicht nog in een andere klasse wat gaan hobbyen. En wie weet wat de mogelijkheden in 2024 zijn? Maar ja, die Duitsers zijn nu niet echt een match qua karakter. Maar ach, misschien gaat Daniel er eens een toontje lager van zingen? Wat minder de clown zijn en wat meer werken aan zijn snelheid?

  Vanuit Ricciardo snap ik het wel.
  Die ziet op deze manier nog een kansje om in de top te blijven.
  
  Maar vanuit Mercedes niet bepaald. Je hoort geluiden dat Ricciardo eigenlijk helemaal niet zo geweldig technisch onderlegt is, dus waarom zou je hem als testrijder willen hebben?
  Het enige voordeel is dat hij als reserve rijder wel ervaren is.

Je gaat toch met die bankrekening en op die leeftijd niet meer naast Toto staan als een schoothondje. Dan ga je toch lekker genieten van andere dingen in het leven of lol hebben in een andere raceklasse. Onbegrijpelijke keuze zou ik dit vinden.
