Binotto kritisch op FIA: "Veiligheid moet altijd voorop staan"

De Japanse Grand Prix was afgelopen weekend een verregend spektakelstuk. Het circuit van Suzuka was kletsnat en vlak na de start werd de race voor enkele uren stilgelegd. Vervolgens ging de race weer verder maar vroeg men zich af of de wedstrijdleiding dit niet beter had kunnen aanpakken. Ook Mattia Binotto was boos.

Bij de start van de Japanse Grand Prix werd al snel duidelijk dat de omstandigheden te gevaarlijk waren. In de eerste ronde spinden meerdere coureurs en crashte Ferrari-coureur Carlos Sainz uit de race. De Spanjaard kreeg last van aquaplaning en had het geluk dat al zijn collega's hem konden ontwijken.

Start

Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto was niet te spreken over de beslissingen van de wedstrijdleiding en de FIA. De teambaas van Ferrari reageerde kwaad tegenover de internationale media: "Hadden we wel een staande start moeten hebben of hadden we de race moeten starten vanachter de Safety Car? Ik denk dat starten achter de Safety Car zeker veiliger was geweest."

Binotto hoopt dat de wedstrijdleiding in het vervolg beter op de veiligheid van de coureurs gaat letten. De teambaas is duidelijk in zijn bewoording: "Veiligheid moet altijd voorop staan. Waarom ik dit zeg? Toen de race werd hervat wisselde iedereen naar de inters. Die waren sneller maar ze hadden weinig grip. Het zicht was ook slecht en misschien kreeg je door achter de SC te starten een paar rondjes om de situatie te begrijpen. Ook om eerst feedback te krijgen vanuit de coureurs om dan vervolgens en beslissing te nemen."
