Grosjean over bekritiseren HALO: "Ik was echt heel stom"

Romain Grosjean was in eerste instantie geen fan van de introductie van de HALO. De Fransman vond de beschermbeugel niet passen bij het uiterlijk van de F1-wagen. Na zijn zware crash in Bahrein in 2020 is zijn mening compleet gedraaid.

"Ik was echt stom", zegt Romain Grosjean op zijn officiële YouTube-kanaal. "Dat was het eerste wat ik zei na mijn incident. Ik was heel echt stom. Zonder HALO was ik dood."

Twee seizoenen terug boorde in Sakhir zijn Haas-bolide dwars door de vangrail op hoge snelheid. De wagen werd door tweeën gesplitst en de auto vatte vlam. De cockpit met Grosjean was achter de vangrail gekomen. De Fransman kon zichzelf uit de vlammenzee bevrijden en hield alleen brandwonden over aan zijn handen.

In zijn video verwijst Grosjean naar de dood van landgenoot Jules Bianchi op het circuit van Suzuka in 2014. De Ferrari-pupil gleed tijdens dubbelgeel van een natte baan af op de plek waar een hijskraan bezig was om een auto te bergen. De Fransman kwam met hoge snelheid onder het voertuig direct met zeer zwaar hoofdletsel tot gevolg. Bianchi was na een lang ziektebed niet meer te redden.

Het incident geeft Grosjean gemengde gevoelens. "Zijn ongeluk heeft mijn leven gered. Jules redde mijn leven in Bahrein." Daarmee doelt de huidig IndyCar-coureur op de actie die de FIA nam met het ontwikkelen van extra hoofd -en nekbescherming na het overlijden van Bianchi. "Als er geen HALO was, zat ik hier niet en kon ik niet dit soort videos maken."

In de IndyCar rijdt Grosjean met een variant op de HALO: het aeroscreen. Dat is een soort ruit dat rondvliegend materiaal moet tegenhouden. "Op ovals is dat beter met die hoge snelheden. Elk stukje materiaal kan dan door je borst vliegen, je helm of nek dat voor schade kan zorgen."

De Fransman ziet dus de noodzaak in van extra hoofdbescherming ondanks het uiterlijk ervan. "De HALOis natuurlijk niet het mooiste onderdeel op de auto en heeft veel gewicht, maar ik zal nu niet meer instappen in een wagen zonder HALO of een dak of kooi wat mijn hoofd beschermt."

Ik denk dat het velen het toen met hem eens waren en dat velen het nu ook met hem eens zijn.

De Halo is niet meer weg te denken uit de F1 (en andere raceklassen) en heeft inmiddels al ernstig letsel voorkomen en zelfs levens gered. Prima ontwikkeling dus.

Ik denk dat het velen het toen met hem eens waren en dat velen het nu ook met hem eens zijn.

De Halo is niet meer weg te denken uit de F1 (en andere raceklassen) en heeft inmiddels al ernstig letsel voorkomen en zelfs levens gered. Prima ontwikkeling dus.

  Geweldige uitvinding en hoewel ik erg op veiligheid ben gesteld in F1 was ik ook heel sceptisch bij de introductie maar heb dan vrij snel mijn mening herzien.
  
  De eerste races (2018?) bleek die lelijke Halo snel een zege. Dacht dat Charles Leclerc de eerste was in Spa die daar het geluk mocht van ervaren. Intussen oa Ericcson, Hamilton, Grosjean en nogal wat anderen die ik nu niet onmiddellijk voor geest kan halen, en dat is enkel in F1.
  
  Ook de lagere raceklasses zijn ermee gebaat. Makino in F2 was de eerste en die was oorspronkelijk ook geen favoriet van de Halo ... tot dat moment. Dit jaar op Silverstone in een F2 race de beste voorbeeld waarom dit er is. Denis Hauger die met de neus Roy Nissany op de Halo raakt. Zonder de Halo had dat een verschrikkelijk accident geweest. Eens ytuben voor de liefhebbers...

  Maar ondertussen heeft de HALO veel ellende voorkomen en moet ik humble pie eten en erkennen, godzijdank is er de halo.

Als als als GRO vanwege de HALO niet kon ontsnappen was hij levend verbrand geweest geworden.
Want dat was nog een laatste kritiekpunt, wat als.
Zelfs ondersteboven bied de HALO vrije doorgang.
Het is dus noodzakelijk.
Maar het blijft een lelijke teenslipper!

  Als als als, dan zat zijn hoofd er niet meer op vrees ik. In het geval van fik weet ik niet zeker of bijvoorbeeld Zhou wel op tijd uit de bolide kon ontsnappen.

  inderdaad, Grosjean was onthoofd geweest zoals Helmuth Koinigg destijds. Dat kunnen we wel met aangrenzende zekerheid stellen.
  Bizar om dat te moeten realiseren als je Grosjean bent. Lijkt me moeilijker te verwerken dan dat Ericsson 'm geraakt heeft. ;-)
