Verstappen tast in duister: "De lange run is nog een vraagteken"

Tweevoudig wereldkampioen Max Verstappen keek tevreden terug op de vrijdag in Austin. Bij de eerste vrije training zette de Red Bull Racing-coureur de tweede tijd neer.

Bij VT2 stond het testen van nieuw Pirelli's centraal. De sessie duurde daarom ook een halfuur langer dan normaliter. De Nederlander eindigde in deze training als zevende. Het testen van het rubber stond gepland in Japan, maar dat viel op Suzuka letterlijk in het water.

“De eerste vrije training was eigenlijk best goed”, laat Verstappen na de tweede vrije training op het Circuit of the Americas weten op zijn eigen website. ”We probeerden een paar dingen met de auto en gelukkig stonden we er vooraan bij en dat is erg positief.“

Hij vervolgt: “We wisten dat de tweede vrije training anders zou verlopen vanwege de Pirelli bandentest. Ze gaven mij de C1 band en die gebruiken we hier niet, dus het was erg lastig, maar gelukkig konden we het programma afwerken.”

Vooruitblikkend op de rest van het weekend, is Verstappen positief gestemd, maar tast nog wel in het duister over zijn ware potentie. “Voor zaterdag ziet het er goed uit, maar eerst moeten we kijken hoe snel wel we zijn in één rondje. De lange run is nog een beetje een vraagteken, omdat we allemaal de tweede vrije training misten", doelde de 25-jarige op de speciale test.
