Verstappen eert overleden Mateschitz: "Ik heb veel aan hem te danken"

Vlak voor de kwalificatie in Austin kreeg Red Bull Racing een groot verlies te voortduren. Eigenaar Dieter Mateschitz overleed en Red Bull begon de kwalificatie met een steen in hun maag. Max Verstappen kon Mateschitz geen eerbetoon geven met een pole en hij noteerde de derde tijd op COTA.

Verstappen start de race morgen vanaf de tweede plaats aangezien Charles Leclerc een gridstraf van 10 plaatsen moet incasseren vanwege een motorwissel. Verstappen heeft dus nog altijd een goede kans op een zege maar zal wel alles in de strijd moeten gooien, Carlos Sainz was immers sneller en de Spanjaard is gebrand op een goed resultaat.

Mateschitz

Na afloop van de kwalificatie meldde Verstappen zich bij interviewster van dienst Danica Patrick. Vanzelfsprekend herdacht Verstappen daar Mateschitz: "Het was pijnlijk nieuws voor iedereen. Hij heeft zoveel betekend voor Red Bull, de sport en zeker ook voor mij. Wat hij heeft gedaan voor mij, voor mijn carrière en in feite ook mijn leven, dan is dit nieuws lastig. Het is een moeilijke dag en we probeerden alles te geven. Maar jammer genoeg lukte het niet helemaal."

Trots maken

Morgen kan Verstappen orde op zaken stellen en kan hij zomaar op het hoogste treetje van het podium staan. Verstappen weet dat het een lastige klus gaat worden maar de Nederlander verwacht een mooie race: "We hebben nog steeds een race voor de boeg. We gaan er alles aan doen om hem morgen trots te maken. Ik denk dat onze auto normaal gesproken sneller is in de race dan in de kwalificatie. Vandaag waren de verschillen in ieder geval al klein."

  Daat heb ik naar gekeken. In de GPS data. Heb me beperkt tot VT3. Daar was de race pace van Sainz indrukwekkend.
  Sainz deed die op geel en Verstappen op rood.
  Sainz was per ronde een seconde sneller. EN er was amper verval in rondetijd.
  
  Echter heb ik de onboard van Verstappen gehoord. Die vertelde dat ze snel zouden zijn in de race.
  
  Ben benieuwd.

  Idd Snailer, de racepace van Max op rood stond acht wel in de schaduw van de racepace van Carlos op geel. Maar het kan zijn dat de rode band hier echt een band is voor 1 rondje wn dat de RB op geel en wit ook veel beter zal gaan.

  Heeft Verstappen wel op wit of rood gereden, da_bartman. In ieder geval niet in VT2 en VT3. Peres ook niet in deze VT's.

  Carlos heeft meermaals (net als Perez) laten zien het tempo van Max en Charles niet te kunnen volgen in de races. Dan is een long run leuk, maar op zondag moet ie het eerst maar eens waarmaken.

  @Snailer , ik denk dat jouw vraag is of Max wel op geel en wit heeft gereden... Nee Max heeft alleen nog maar op rood gereden. Ik zeg ook nergens dat ze bij RB wel op geel/wit hebben gereden. Ik denk dat ze bij RB veel vertrouwen hebben in geel en wit, maar omdat het iig een tweestopper gaat worden ze hebben gekeken of ze op rood kunnen starten.

  Max gaat morgen de sterren van de hemel rijden. die wil absoluut voorkomen dat Dietrich door een helmut.
